North Korea Rocket Launch Will Cut U.S. Food Aid

The White House bluntly warned North Korea on Tuesday that going ahead with a long-range rocket launch would mean an end to planned American food aid to the secretive and starvation-plagued country.

"It's impossible to imagine that we would be able to follow through (and) provide the nutritional assistance that we had planned on providing, given what would be a flagrant violation of North Korea's basic international obligations," Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, told reporters aboard Air Force One.

North Korea says its rocket launch, expected between Thursday and Monday, aims to put a satellite called Kwangmyongsong-3 (Shining Star) in orbit as it marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the regime's founder, Kim Il Sung. But the United States and other countries have denounced the move as an attempt to test, or show off, the country's ballistic missile capabilities.

Carney sounded as though Washington had not given up on international efforts to get Pyongyang to step back—but warned of diplomatic consequences if it does not.

"We're continuing to work with our international partners. The proposed missile launch, if conducted, would represent a clear and serious violation of North Korea's obligations under two United Nations Security Council resolutions that explicitly prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles," the spokesman said.

"We will work with our partners on next steps if North Korea goes through with this provocation, and we continue to urge countries that have influence on North Korea to work to persuade North Korea to consider a different path, the path that would lead to progress toward feeding its people, educating its people and ending its severe, self-imposed isolation," Carney said.

Carney delivered a similar warning Monday over news reports that North Korea could also soon move to conduct another underground nuclear test.

"We're not going to talk about intelligence assessments. But any action towards an underground test would be a provocative action and would be the kind of action that would demonstrate, again, to the international community, North Korea's refusal to live up to its obligations. But I don't have anything specific for you on those reports," Carney said.

Let them cut aid. If the North Korean people had any cojones, they would have ousted that nest of dictators long ago.

We'll cut off food aid to the Koreans for a failed rocket test.
and for the arabs who butcher our military personnel we issue a stern warning.
Somehow their disparate treatment at the hands of the obama regime smacks of racism.

We don't have troops on the ground in North Korea. And a North Korea with ballistic missiles is more dangerous than Afghanistan.

It must just be his white half that is raciest. After blacks are incapable of being raciest.

Your points are well taken Vern. And I'm not trying to minumise the possible threat from Korea. But we have HOW many millions of mooslims in the middle east that want NOTHING more in their lives than to kill Americans. Korea is posturing and saber rattling. The folks in the mid east have openly declared war on us.

Strategy and foreign policy has to be tailor made for each nation and each situation -- we can't adopt a one-size-fits-nobody approach. If we bomb country X, that doesn't oblige us willy nilly to bomb country Y.

As regards North Korea, the only tool we have is an embargo -- and a slight hope that if things get bad enough inside North Korea, the people may throw the bums out.

Similar could be said of here, and obama (deliberately un-capitalized)

We'll send them some "viagra" rocket fuel in lieu of this month's food shipment. :D

There was some idiot politician in Washington on the radio the other day before the launch that said, "They are wasting money and resources needlessly on military spending when the money could be used to help their economy and the population." I didn't know exactly who he was talking about; Washington D.C. or North Korea. Talk about a pot calling the kettle black! Sadly, this guy is typical of what the American citizens "elect" to public office; no wonder we're so screwed.

The main problem with ousting the North Korean government is the Chinese. They would help squash an uprising in no time. They don't want to lose that buffer between them and the west.

Now when are we going to send a submaring and a special underwater recovery team to recover the payload from that fail rocket launch? This will prove if its carrying a weather satelite or a dummy warhead.

And the main problem with that is, once they cross into North Korea it ceases to be a buffer state. On the other hand, a neutral state that might emerge from a rebellion in North Korea might be even more to China's taste that what they have now.

One of these days the Chinese are going to conclude that North Korea is more trouble than they're worth.
