Catholic Group Protests ‘Gay Jesus’ Film & Stage Show: A ‘Blasphemous Homosexual Play’

The new documentary, “Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption (http://www.corpuschristi-themovie.com/index.html),” follows 108 Productions‘ revival of Terrence McNally’s controversial play “Corpus Christi.” The stage production, which first debuted in New York in in 1998, retells the Christian redemption story, with Jesus Christ being depicted as a gay man living in Texas during the 1950s.

The play’s resurgence is already being met with mass protest, as is the film’s documentation of the revival. The Catholic group America Needs Fatima is spearheading an online petition (http://campaigns.americaneedsfatima.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=380&email=reritchie@gmail.com&fname=Robert&lname=Ritchie&treat=Mr.&utm_source=E0432b&utm_medium=email&utm_term=E0432b&utm_content=E0432b&utm_campaign=19372) against both initiatives. As for the stage production, ANF calls it, a “blasphemous homosexual play.” Already, the group has collected more than 13,200 signatures supporting this charge.
The boilerplate protest message that the organization allows interested parties to send out comes with the following subject: “Stop The Blasphemy!” The letter reads (http://campaigns.americaneedsfatima.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=380&email=reritchie@gmail.com&fname=Robert&lname=Ritchie&treat=Mr.&utm_source=E0432b&utm_medium=email&utm_term=E0432b&utm_content=E0432b&utm_campaign=19372):
I strongly protest against the showing of the blasphemous play Corpus Christi, which includes a Christ-like figure who reportedly has sexual relations with his apostles, and of the movie which promotes it, Corpus Christi: Playing With Redemption.
The Person of Jesus Christ is Sacred and untouchable. To portray Him as a homosexual, or even to insinuate it, is an unspeakable blasphemy which I reject with all my soul.
http://www.theblaze.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/sf-weekly.jpgI ask you to immediately cancel the showing of this movie and play, and to offer a public apology to Our Lord Jesus Christ and to all God fearing Americans.
While critics are staunch in their opposition, backers — particularly those behind the production — deny that the play and the film supporting it cross any lines. Instead, proponents maintain that the subject matter is timely and will assist in helping to dispel homophobia and bullying.
“Our tour aims to change the story on religious bullying and homophobia in all ages and walks of life, by teaching our audiences to love themselves for who they are,” James Brandon, the co-founder of 108 Productions and an actor in the play, said in a statement (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/17/corpus-christi-playing-with-redemption_n_1433155.html). “As the voices of intolerance around the world continue preaching ignorance and hate, we will keep raising our voices from a place of love — and as our tour continues, we will spread that love to places where love for LGBT people is lacking.”
Here’s a preview for the film, below:
As the controversy heats up, those behind the projects have no intention of backing down. As SF Weekly (http://www.sfweekly.com/) has noted, the play caused a major uproar (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/17/corpus-christi-playing-with-redemption_n_1433155.html) years ago as well. So, controversy, it seems, is par for the course for those promoting “Corpus Christi.”

This should not be a "Catholic" thing. We should all be angry at this.

Its not just a Catholic thing. David Dewhurst, Republican Lieutenant Governor of Texas said the following statement when the drama department at Tarleton State University was going to put on a production of it.
"No one should have the right to use government funds or institutions to portray acts that are morally reprehensible to the vast majority of Americans,"Dewhurst, a Presbyterian, was not the only one objecting. Many of the residents in Stephenville (we used to live there and my wife got her bachelors and masters degrees at Tarleton State.) along with Tarleton State employees protested it, Stephenville is predominantly Baptist.

The student director that picked that play calls himself a gay christian (not my words, they are his) and a former Mormon. I knew a few Mormons that had serious objections as well and they said the student could not have been a true Mormon if he is in fact gay. Tarleton got a lot of heat over the play and did not allow it saying they cancelled the play due to safety concerns.

So I do understand your concern, but have faith that while the SF Weekly and Huffington Post might call it a Catholic issue, the Catholics are not alone in objecting to this Blasphemy! My hat is off to you for bringing this up.

Edited to add: Opps .... left a sentence out .... its there now

It is sick and shows the depravity of much of society. That is o.k. there will be a pay day some day.

Its just a way for the gay people to jerk the strings of Christians to get a response that they can use it as justification of church "gay bashing". The denoucement needs to be calm, articulate, and measured. No hot heated shouting or name calling, just a well thought out measured responce, let them start the name calling.

Bread and Circuses. Gladiator games. This sort of garbage was very popular in Rome...just before it fell.
