Well I finally found a 22WMR that fits the bill. Last trip home I ordered a Henry Golden Boy in 22M, but when I stopped in the shop a 22LR is what they ordered. There is going to be a happy teen at Christmas anyway.

I had read some nice write ups about the current line up at Savage. My intent was to find something that could be multi purpose and more efficient in terms of ammo cost. Additionally, I really wanted something similar to the Win 70 & Rem 700 in terms of function so we could train in all the requisite marksman (& woman) skills where we could execute similar tasks of the larger bolt action rifle.

I ordered the Savage 93 FVSS XP package which comes with a 4 x 32 scope already bore sighted. Just a tick above $300.

This will also fill a crock pot nicely with some rabbit or squirrel stew

Those are nice rifles. I have the Marlin rifle similar to the picture you show. Black synth stock, stainless bull barrel and action. My brother has the Savage like yours. They both shoot phenomenally well. With head shots up close and body shots if needed at longer range, it is a great medium range critter getter. Effective on varmints up to coyote with the hot ballistic tips or TNT HP, and slower solids for edible game make it extremely versatile. My TNTs are 30gr rated at 2200fps. I found some 60gr solids at 1650fps for game.

You are going to enjoy that rifle.

I have been looking for some heavier bullets in .22M. Would you mind sharing which brand you found?

Very nice. I've been "kinda" looking for a nice .22 magnum rifle. One of these days.

Savage. Possibly the 'best blast for the buck' when it comes to rimfire rifles.

It was several years ago. But I have a link for some Federal Game-Shok at Midway that are 50gr at 1530 fps and intended for small gam. They are HP but the old style HP and not all that expansive as compared to something like the 2200fps TNT 30gr JHP that literally explode in small critters.

Waiting for a range report.

As soon as I get home this will be the first thing I fire. Although, don't hold your breath, I fly out of Azzcrackistan on Dec 13th.

I had always considered the Ruger the best bang for the buck, however their 77/22 was over $700.00 +/-. Sure glad I found the Savage!

William, tempt, tempt, tempt...just do it!

I picked up a Savage MkII F awhile back. It's the bottom of the line .22LR bolt gun. It was used and scuffed and priced at $79. It doesn't have the accutrigger or a scope but it is a very accurate shooter. The trigger is crisp and it's alot of fun to shoot. I've only put cheap bulk stuff through it so far and been very happy with it. When it cools down some, and I don't melt at the range, I'll try more brands of ammo in it.
Savage is a good buy in rimfire rifles.

Have a Savage 93 in .17 HMR - A really great little rifle. I expect you'll be quite pleased with yours.

I also have a 93. I started out with one without the Accutrigger and sold it when I got a second one with the Accutrigger. The trigger is great, maybe the best feature of the rifle. Both rifles were amazingly accurate. They are my older daughters favorite rimfires.

I also took a .22 LR Ruger 77/22 and put on a .22 Magnum barrel and trigger guard assembly. It shoots extremely well and the conversion was not expensive. I did have to do a little wood work but nothing that would prevent converting it back to LR if I want to.

I have used the Federal 50 grain bullets and found them accurate in both my 77/22 and Single Six. The expansion is not explosive and it has deep penetration.

I have a marlin .22wmr that looks almost identical to the one in the picture it's a great gun. I might have "commandeered" it from my dad, and he bought it sometime in the 80s. I bought him a Savage 93 with a thumbhole stock and stainless barrel in .17HMR to replace it and a few other guns that might have made their way to my safe. Now that thing is a tack driver, I think it is the only gun my mom is ok with him buying she loves it!
