My baby is FINALLY done.
This has been a long project for me. I found a 50's vintage Series 70 Colt Lightweight Commander in .38 Super a little over a year ago. I gave it to my local smith, Marc McCord, for some upgrading. We tinkered and tinkered trying to get it 100%. Finally in April, we succeeded. It ran like a top. So now it needed a new finish. So... off it went to MD Labs in Arizona.
Now, you have to understand. Kevin "MadDog" McClung is very opinionated and has a WICKEDLY warped sense of humor. I LIKE that in a guy. :D He saw it was only a .38 Super and made the comment "Well that thing wouldn't sting much more than a bumblebee. We could do it in a yellow and black stripe." I thought that was hilarious. This pistol is for IDPA fun matches. So I thought what the heck. Steve Morrison of MD Labs did the coating and few additional tweeks.
Now I have taken a LOT of teasing over this project. But it has been fun.
Now she is done. This ain't no bumblebee! "Tigger" is born.

"The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things"
I like it! I don't think I'd wanna own it, but I like it. :D
Question: I'd always been told not to checker the front strap on Colt Alloy frames cause it weakened them too much. Was I told wrong or did MD do something special there?

Surely you have some legal recourse. I would think that one could sue the custom shop for doing their gun that way.
Jus' bring it with you next month and I'll try to get some blue over that stuff they got all over it. :p

I dunno man....
I really like that thing. :D
Its a great gun, and I really like its looks.
The more and more I know about Mad Dog Labs the more and more I like about them......if only I had money....I would probably be the only 15 year old on the planet with a Panther if I had the money. lol
Only thing is if I had a panther....I would probably carry the beastie..... :D :D

I dunno....to me it looks like the kind of gun Pooh would use when he was going on an "Expotition" to find a "Heffalump". :D

Thanks for all the comments guys and gals. You folks "get it". This is NOT your fathers 1911. Its ME! Who says every pistol you own has to be of classic styling? Why do they all have to be the same? Most of you have figured out by now, I have a warped sense of humor. This pistol reflects that. It is a 100% reliable pistol. It shoots nice tight groups. The new grips feel incredible. You can't believe how ergonomic they are.
And it is going to be a HECK of a lot of fun to pull this gun from concealment on Saturday's match and watch the faces. lol :D
The comments here and on 1911forums have been pretty good. TacticalForums have been brutal... in their teasing me. :D The comments on pistolsmiths.com have almost been violent. Talk about snobs!
Bottom line is... no one has to shoot it but me. And I love the thing.
Lee, to answer your question, I don't know that there was any special magic here. This is a 1950s vintage. I have about2500 rounds through it. We were going to put a steel ramp in becuase of the wear and dings that show up in most of these frames. They told me it looked like I had put may 100 rounds through it. I think we got a very good treatment on this frame. So the checkering went very well. Almost too well as that puppy was SHARP before the coating. The TefCoat DID softent that some. But I am STILL not shooting a class with 1500 rounds through it. My hands wouldbe a bloody pulp.
And for all the traditionalists.... they are just about finished with a Kimber Stainless conversion to their "HardUse" format for me as well. This one is going to be beautiful. I should see something on it in a few weeks.

Bubba- Is there any chance that you was the brother that got dropped too much as a kid? What the heck were you thinking. Good grief man, you'll never see a Glock looking like that. http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/forums/icons/icon29.gif

LOL.... Actually bro... I have seen Tupperwear looking like that. Got a friend or two in the SPECOPS community. They have done stuff like this to GROCKS in the past. (And a number of OTHER toys) Just depends on the mission. I will admit, in those cases, the striping wasn't permanent.
Mine is on for the duration. You gotta admit... it DOES match my personality. :D :D :D

Hmm... At first I wasn't sure, but it seems the little critter grows on you. :p After I had looked at the picture a few times, I have to admit I like it!
(So what kind of grips are those, then?)
Bubba

Tony,
If you notice the breakdown, those are MD Labs Gun Grips. Mad Dog Knives us this material on the handles of all their knives. It is virtually indestructible. I have seen the mateiral shot with a .45 and not even scratch it. The material will withstand 70,000 psi. The shape is a new custom design by Kevin McClung of MD Labs. It is shaped a bit larger but actually feels more comfortable. I have shot thin grips, standard and these. I have to say these feel better than any other grips I have tried. I will have them on both this pistol and a Kimber they are rebuilding for me right now.
I got a range report a few minutes ago. I quote:
Just back from the range. Tigger is running like, well, a Tigger!
We shot left handed, right handed, one hand, two hand, upside
down, left and right and it runs great. Kevin shot several groups
rapid fire at 15 yard that you could cover with a 50 cent piece.
It shipped tonight and will be waiting for me when I return on Friday.
"The wonderful thing about Tiggers, is Tiggers are wonderful things.."
http://www.jps.net/funnyguy/bouncyti.gif Ok so what I wanna know is where does Eeyore fit into this? I mean the donkey either has to be the holster or the operator. http://www.familyfriendsfirearms.com/forums/icons/icon29.gif

And Bubba dear...are you telling me that your incapable of saying something nice, so you have to say nothing at all so you don't break your promise??? Sheesh... ;)
Ahhhh Woozels....another one of those Animals of Hostile Intent. That makes sense. I do believe Woozles are scared of Tiggers. :D

Bubba, that is pretty cool, I like it. I think you should bring it to the meet because when Wendy and Fal308 was down here and went to the car show Wendy bought a matching undie set that would match that gun perfectly, maybe at the meet she would consider showing your gun off with her matching clothes this would make for a exciting pic. :D :D Yes, and knowing Wendy she would do this.
Holly Cow!!!! What a terrificc gun! I want one for ccw what anice gun.

YOU know why I said that Miss Oreo Eyes..... :p Brother Stu had nothing to do with it. hehehe
Oh yeah... Tigger is coming with me. Several people have expressed interest in seeing it and shooting it. Photo Ops??? Well... I take no responsibility there. If FAL wants to take them... that is HIS business. I'll loan Tigger out.... But I am not taking undie shots of another man's best gal!
Many compadre.... I have been waiting for you to show up and see this. I KNEW you would love it, mi amigo.
Buba, compadre I certanly will carry that baby, who knows maybe a BG seeing the tigger will never comit a crime on you.
The pistol is very cool, and the best thing is that it shots extremely well.
The designe is radical o.k.,but the gun simply is so cool I can resist to ask permition to shoot it downborder pal.

Well.. thanks for the follow up comments.... :)
Tigger went to his first match yesterday. He had a HECK of a good time. Lots of comments. Some good... some not so good. lol But everyone that has seen it has had to laugh. And what can be wrong with that???
I got a note from the customiser today. He actually thanked ME for letting him do it. They had as much fun doing it as I am showing it off and shooting it. He said something to the effect of Congradulations for having the stones to order it. And that I was a sick puppy... and maybe thats why we get along so well.. :D
There are new pcitures of Tigger and me at the match yesterday. Even one of him eating a poodle... ;) See them at my web site under Gun Fun and the CENTEX IDPA match with yesterday's date.
... and thre is NOTHING as sneaky as an Otter....who is after Oreos.... or Soccer Balls.... ;)
