I don't shoot much .22LR as of late.
If I had some place I could just go plinking, I'd probably go through a brick a week. A .22 is not much fun (for me) at the range. No shooting of cans or other such fun stuff.
A few weeks ago, I did take my little .22 rifle to the range so I could sight in its scope. The rifle is a Remington 552 semi-auto. The scope is a $30.00 Bushnell 3X9 variable that I bought back in the 60's.
Carston and Stu said the scope looks like a cigar tube.
Distance was 50 yards, with Remington plinking ammo, not match. There was about a 10 knot crosswind. Not the best conditions or ammo, but it's what I had to work with.
Here's the target. Two 3 shot groups. The tarnished thing is a quarter.

Is this "reasonable" accuracy for a non-tricked out rifle at 50 yards? Some folks zero their .22's at 25 yards, but I've always thought that 25 yards is handgun range. At a minimum.

With that wind, I would say not bad at all. I use a Remington 597 and a cheap rimfire scope, and with the Federal bulk pack, my results are tighter, but not on a windy day. I sight in at about 50 yds, too.
Cliff- You shoot those "I can cover the group with a quarter" the same way I do. A nickel here, a nickel there, a nickel over there, etc. :D

Cliff C,
I do shoot .22lr a lot as it seems that whenever I go out plinking, I end up with 3 - 4 young neophyte types as assistant shooters and they/we go thru a brickload of .22's each time.
50 yds. is correct for rifle sight-in. and what with the breeze, etc. you had to deal with, I'd say kudo's are to be awarded to thee. No bunny, squirrel or other little furry critters would stand a chance if they were to attack you en mass with that setup. So sleep well tonight and worry not about "revenge of the rodents", you're well prepared to take on all comers.
I did laugh at Stu's comments..."a nickle here, a nickle there". When I'm lucky I qualify for that too. Usually, it's loose change everywhere when I go out.

I could certainly live with that group. Not bad at all. If you want better, just experiment with several types of ammo to find what your rifle likes best.

That's better than I can do with my Ruger 10/22, but I rarely shoot it at 50 yds. I sight it in at 25 yds, because it's my sqirrel rifle, and Indiana hardwood forests rarely are open enough to present a shot at a squirrel at more than 25 yds.

If you shot both groups with the same scope setting and the same aim point, then I'd rate it at kind of a "good" with a bit of minus.
If you changed scope settings between the groups (or your aim point), then I'd give it a solid "good". That's assuming that all three on each side are members of the same group.
There's a whole litney of things folks do to tighten .22 groups (mostly with the ammunition) - but, as is - I'd go squirrel hunting with it.

Oh Yah...Cliff, as long as we are cigar tube bashing...post a pic of that thing,
Honest guys, as I recall it had to have been a cigar tube with both ends cut off. Then if I rememember correctly he had epoxied a small mag glass lens at each end and he had to have glued black thread or something for the cross hairs
But ya know...ya gotta give him credit cause Optics are more than likely banned in the PRK.
Now if you had a real scope like say this

Then you could shoot groups like this

Minor little over sight...I don't have a scoped .22
Honestly, Cliff....they look like good groups to me. I have a .22 pump and semi but it has been over 30 years since I shot either.
So where the heck has everyone gone
Carston
By the way...black was just too menecing looking to the guys at the range....She is more subdued now www.photoasa.com/disk2/3063/96336_SavC2.jpg (http://www.photoasa.com/disk2/3063/96336_SavC2.jpg)

Your group sizes are fine for shooting into a crosswind, but you should target the gun again when conditions are more conducive for accuracy; perhaps early in the morning, when the air is still. Also, try a couple of other brands of ammo, as I have found that some rifles have a distinct like for some ammo.
I have a number of .22 rifles, and I love to shoot them. The most accurate of the bunch is a Ruger bolt action, which I've reworked. This rifle will consistently shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards. It has a 4X scope which is sighted to hit at 75 yards. Since most of my shooting is open desert, this works better for me than a 50 yard zero. I holdover slightly for 100 yards+ and just a hair low for 50 yards. The rapid fall-off of the bullets beyond 125 yards makes hits difficult, even with a scope, but 100 yard shots are still pretty easy. This rifle seems to do its best with Remington or Speer 40 grain high velocity solid points.

Thanks, folks!
The ammo suggestion is a good one and one I am aware of. In addition to accuracy, .22 auto-loaders can be picky about what ammo they'll feed reliably. That's why I had the Remmy fodder - my Ruger MKII pistol doesn't jam with the stuff, unlike Federal and CCI.
I'll pick up some CCI mini-mag and see how the 552 likes it.
The wind on that day is the "X" factor. There were times that I could have sworn that (and swore at) the rifle was shifting zero on me. So much so, that I double checked tightness of the scope mounting screws.
I'm not *too* concerned - I bought the rifle to use as a can skipper and pine cone killer. If I wanted varmit killer accuracy, I'd go with a different rig. Besides, the squirrels in our yard are so bold I don't need a rifle - just a baseball bat. ;)
Dutch - Your Ruger sounds like the rig I'd go with.
Carston - Your images aren't displaying, and the link tells me I'm not authorized to view the page. Having a bad hair day, or is that Mama Nets way of punishing you for making fun of my scope? :p
