Referring to my post on the M1A, I bought a new Squad Rifle today. :D

The $600 one I saw was a Norinco.:barf: The other 2 were new Springfields. This one has a black polymer stock. Now I just need ammo, mags and a hard case.

I assume that scope offer for $99 is worth it? $680 for the scope, rings & mount.

Thanks for all your help. :D

Congrats :) Seems like everyone is getting into there M1/M1A game lately...Well, almost eveyone and I wonder who that could be Stu  Oh, whoops....I wasn't going mention any names.
Yes I would say the $99.00 scope deal is a bargain and go for it.

Safe shooting and let us know what you think.

Dinosaur- Congratulations on your new MBR. Let me do a little looking around the shop, and see if I can get you a good deal on a couple of 20 round USGI M1A mags.

Thanks guys. Stu, that would be great. :D I only need a couple.

I did order the scope. I live about 10 minutes from a state range & it goes out to 300 yards. I`m not sure if my eyes do though.

What kind of ammo should I use? I`d like to zero it in with something that at least hits the same area of the paper.

To start just get you some surplus and get a few hundred rounds through it. Use a good grease, not CLP or you will have problems with feeding. I was told any synthetic auto grease or the best I guess is Tetra gun grease.
You will probably be in the 2-2.5 Group with surplus, if you reload I have a good combo that could tighten that up abit.

Again congrats, happy shooting and be safe.

go to snipercountry.com and fultonarmory.com for info.

Also get the Scott Duff book.

The german is the best surplus ammo. I've also shot a lot of Radway Green, english. Fedarl Gold Match will give great groups.

Regards.

Dinosaur - Congrats on your purchase of a very fine rifle! :D

If Stu doesn't have any at the shop, you might want to try Cole Distributing (http://www.cole-distributing.com/specials.html). They have new in wrap USGI 20 round mags starting at $41.95 each.

Like Carston mentioned, milsurp ammo is your best bet. Just make sure it's non-corrosive. What you may want to do is pick up a copy of Shotgun News and see who has what.

Carston is also right about using grease for lubricating the camming areas and receiver rails where the bolt lug and op rod handle ride. For a grease, I strongly recommend Lubriplate 130A. It's available through Brownells (http://www.brownells.com) for only $5.95 for a 14oz. can. Lubriplate is the grease selected by the military for use with the M1 and M14. Plastilube can also be used and is even better.

Lastly, a copy of Scott Duff's book The M14 Owners Guide would be a real wise investment for good info on how to properly care for your new rifle.

Enjoy!

Hey and some places for ammo are www.ammoman.com (http://www.ammoman.com) and www.aimsurplus.com (http://www.aimsurplus.com) For a long eye relief Red Dot throw a BSA 42 or 50MM on for now and save your money for the Aimpoint from www.swfa.com. (http://www.swfa.com.)

Hey Cliff, mine came with something special a TM 9-1005-223-2 Department of the Army Technical Manual. Dated January 1963 and it is pretty delailed.

Carston - Yeah, I have the TM's for my M1 and AR's. Depending on what you get, some of them are armorer level and better as a reference manual rather than a tutorial.

IMO, the best reference out there is The U.S. .30 Caliber Gas Operated Service Rifles - A Shop Manual Volumes I & II by Jerry Kuhnhausen.

My copy is getting rather dog eared and when I get my M1A I'll be all set. (Knowing how the Garand works is also a big help). :)

What ever you use for ammo DO NOT use CAVIM ammo!!! They use tar as a sealant around the bullet, and it will plug your gas system, and it's a real bitch to clean out. It you use CAVIM, you'll basically end up with a blot action after 200 rounds.

I got the manual also. I haven`t had a chance to look it over yet.

The problem with breaking it in is the state ranges only allow 3 rounds in the mag. Kinda hard to shoot 150 rounds that way. I heard one of the Conservation Enforcers got stomped south of here over this. Another example of mindlessly enforcing a stupid rule I guess.
