Taking advantage of Widows and orphans.....

I guess I'm gonna do it. :)

I got a call this morning. My friend in the air conditioning business does a lot of work for widows. Every now and then he runs across a lady who has guns left behind when her husband passed away.

He called me a few weeks ago when he had been asked if he knew anyone that might want some strange rifle she had. He looked at it and said he was not interested. But he had a friend..... (That would be me)

It turns out she had a pre-ban Galile .223 with a 30 round and a 50 round mag. One of the local shops offered her $950 for it 2 years ago but would not offer ANYTHING for it last month. I offered her $700.

She took it! I will pick it up Thursday or Friday of this week. Anyone know of any discussion groups for these bad boys? Aftermarket parts and accessories?

Should I feel bad? She got what she wanted. I got what I wanted. Everyone is happy. :)

Bubba- That was a rotten thing to do to that little old lady. The only way you'll ever be able to sleep nights is to get rid of that rifle. So box that sucker up and send it to me. :D Ill make sure it's properly taken care of, and Ill pray that you can sleep nights. :D

I don't know of any discussion groups specifically "targeting" them but the first name here that comes to mind about them is fal308. Jim V is the other. I'm sure either can shed some light on 'em.

(Bubba, can you bring me back a couple of cans of them little canned sausages from Vienna? :D You know they are a redneck delicacy. ;))

Bubba, You should be ashamed taking unfair advantage of a little old lady  After all you are supposed to be A Good Ole Boy from Texas
As for discussion groups check out www.ar15.com (http://www.ar15.com) www.assaultweb.net (http://www.assaultweb.net) and www.ak47 (http://www.ak47) something.

The Galil is an excellent series of rifles. They took the best of the AR15/M16 series and combined it with the best of the AK series.
Another good place to find information on these is over on Tom Bowers' board in the semi-auto section www.subguns.com (http://www.subguns.com)

I picked it up tonight. :)

1992 PRE-BAN Galil .223 Model 386 S
1 - 15 round mag.... and 1 - 50 round mag.

I did a quick take down and it looks pretty clean. Few minor spots under the gas chamber. But think I can get them out. Everything else appears to be in good shape. I would put it at 75 - 80%. Even had the original manual with it.

Some people just step in it don't they. You might try The FAL Files (http://www.l1a1.com/cgi-bin/forums/ultimatebb.cgi) or The Firing Line (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/index.php) for more info.

That almost beats the 1942 US Navy 1911 in mint condition ($600), Nazi Browning HP ($300) and industrial size ultra sonic cleaner I bought from a widow at a yard sale. We should be ashamed of ourselves but ... :o

I've learned quite a bit about them since I got this one. There were SOME in .308 but the majority that were imported were in .223. This one turns out to be one of 1400 that were left sitting on the dock when Action Arms went under in 1989. Thus, it is pre-ban. Those 1400 had the dreaded "S" hand stamped on them and cheapo wooden stocks installed. Most of them were STILL shipped with the "evil" parts in the box. Like mine. :D

I have located a number of different options for the Galil. Original steel mags are a bit high; 35 rounders for $50, 50 rounders for $90 But the Oralite 35s are not bad at $30. NON-Galil steel 35s can be had for about $20. There are some 12 round steel mags for BLANKS that can be had for $15. The filler can be removed and they will now fire regular ammo. Since most of my matches have a 10 round limit, I got three of these. And I got a couple of the Oralite.

I have also located a company in South Africa who is about to release a forward "Scout" type mount for a red dot optic. This mount uses the standard lever attach points of the Galil but instead of mounting to the rear for a scope, it mounts forward over the gas tube. I am working on getting a couple of these from friends in SA. Still haven't located any of the original equipment night sights for it. But if I put a REFLEX-II on it, I don't know that I care.

So far, I am very happy with this rifle. I think it is just going to be a TON of fun to shoot.

I've gotta agree with Carston....something just doesn't look right here. I always thought that a Galile was a semi-auto. But judging from the forearm on the gun in the pic it is a pump. :p

Bubba

Nope... Not a pump. Trust me, NO one can empty a 50 round PUMP as fast as I did that one. :D The photo is just not that good. That is the forend and it covers the Gas Chamber. I will take better pictures in a few days. I was just too excited when I took that one to setup the proper lighting. :) There are some Galils in .308. And those are REALLY hard to find parts for. But the majority of the people with whom I have spoken have the .223 variant.

Will be with us at EOSMII so you can all have a turn. :D

Bubba, there is a new thread just getting started on AR15.com discussing parts sources for the Galile here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=36964#lastPost .
As it developes there may be some good info there for you.

PS I still think it is a pump. :p

Thanks Bill... I know about both of those.. and several more. I bought mags from one of them already. Got an e-mail a few mins ago on an adapter that would let me use all those good cheap USGI AR mags. But the adapter is $125
