AR questions

As most of you know, i picked up a SP1 a week or so ago. I've found out that it is a 1971 vintage, no forward assist, and all the evil things that make guns fun and piss off Janet Reno. :D However there is a big build up of carbon on the bolt. Is there a relatively easy way to remove this? And the Colt factory 20 round mag that came with it only holds 5 rounds. According to a thread at AR15.com it was made pre ban as a hunting mag, and there is a "U" shaped piece in it that prevents it from holding more then 5 rounds. This piece can be legally removed, but I can't get the floor plate off to pull this piece. Any suggestions?

Stu, About a big build up I would say brake cleaner and a small brass brush. Let it soak for a bit and have at it. I would almost bet the inside of thr key may be plugged up and you may nee a .22 or .177 brass brush for inside that.
As for the mag, I don't have a clue. I tried to take apart some Colt 20's I have too. I got the floor plate off but couldn't figure out how the get the springs out, the plate keeper is welded on. Oh well, They work just fine.

Let me know if you can help me out on the Choate Varmint stock.

Good luck, I am off to do yard work and then get to the range today. VMatch, Stoner and the M1A are going have some fun today.

I had to carefully use a flathead screwdriver to "coax" the floorplate off mine. The spring just came out after I stuck my finger in the tube and wiggled it around a bit. Unfortunately (I think), I could never relocate the u-shaped metal piece after I reconverted my mag back to 20. Oh well....

For some reason, I can't get the damn floor plate off of the mag. I might end up sending it to Tree and letting him play with it. he needs 20 round mags for the competition shoots he competes in.

I knew a little superglue on the floorplate when you weren't looking might result in another free mag... teheeeeeeeeheeeeeeee.

Happy 4th of July Stu .

Actually, Stu, I am not sure why your having a problem... unless its a style I am not familiar with (very possible). You simply stick a small screwdriver into the little hole, depress the spring clip and shove the floor plate out with your thumb.

Good luck

Tree- Good idea. Ill give it a shot tomorrow night when I finally get to go home from work. Had I been thinking about it I would have brought that mag and a few other projects with me for these next two days.
