Pump, lever, bolt, semi-auto....what is your preference?
Personally I prefer a lever action. Fast and efficient. But I can live with a pump and they can be equally fast with practice. A bolt action is what I have trouble with. I have never gotten the nack of being able to cycle one with any degree of speed at all. Semi's are just not my cup o' tea. I have nothing against them but am just old fashioned enough to prefer levers. ;)

Well I like the hi-cap auto's they are fun and nowadays they are plenty accurate, next would be the levers hey John Wayne is my hero. then the bolts, never liked them for many years but, have a few now and have found with use (practice) that the bolts can be fast and smooth. Never liked pump rifles don't know why it's my favorite shotgun action.

I preferr semi's not only because I shoot better with them, but because they are quickly becomming the forbidden fruit of firearms.

For general use, I like open sighted lever guns. Nothing like a light, easy handling carbine. When I get plumb serious about it, I go for the scoped bolt actions. I only have two. A .308 and a .22RF, but both are real tack drivers. I've never been a big fan of semi-auto rifles and only have one. Its a cheap clone of the M-14 by Federal Ordinance. Yeah, I know, but its never jammed and its fun to shoot. Besides, it was half the price of a Springfield. I've never had a pump rifle. I have no idea why.

Humm, let's see....I have at least one of all of them pump 22 and well it is just there, but I like my Mossy 500....recieving end is not a good place to stand. I can run 6 rounds of #4 buck and better in abour 5 seconds.....Oh but man I hurt the next day
I have a Lever action Savage 99 in 300 savage....but I don't shoot it. I also have a Winchester Model 70 featherwieght in .308 I don't shoot...those were like family stuff I ended up with.
Now Semi's I have or soon will have 4 AR's in a number of configurations. All three I have now are a lot of fun to shoot wasting ammo and holding a 2-4 inch group at 100.....But get serious the VMatch will hold groups you can cover with a quarter, Stoner with the 300 Meter irons are very nice and the Dissapator will hold it's own.
Then for the big boy toys I have my SA M1A and have only put 50 rounds through it. Cliff, for the time being I am losing the scope and going straight Irons.....I thought you would be happy. Later I want ARMS stuff and it is pricy. The M1A will get the piont across very well IMHO. Might not be a tack driver but 165-168 grains at 300-500 yards....what is 2 inches when aiming at the center of the target. Looks like a Hole to me.
Now I had an awesome Model 70 HBar Varminter and I felt bad...the guy was missing her....so I sold it back.
To replace it I picked up a Savage 110fp in .308 and NIB, just no box. Now I wont be going to the range with that one again until it gets fitted to the new stock and I buy some rings....the light stock wanted to eat may lunch, kick my butt and take names. Well I will tame that beast when the Choate stock Frenchy ordered for my shows up.

So I my opinion.....the function and action would depend on the situation. They all have a purpose in my opinion.

Buddy, are you OK?! No fever? No little purple lizards crawling out of the toilet bowl? Maybe too much Coors Lite?!

Welcome to a more honorable world, my friend. :)

As for me, I like 'em all. For .22's, I prefer semi-auto for plinking and general fun. Ammo is cheap and it's a lot of fun to skip a can up a trail as fast as you can squeeze the trigger.

For military rifles, semi-auto is a given. ;)

For hunting, (if I hunted) I would choose a bolt action for medium to large sized game.

For all around versatility, I believe a lever action 30-30 is tough to beat.

For shotguns, I am VERY fond of my Mossie 590. Relatively short cycle on the pump, and 8 rounds in the tube are a comforting combination.

Variety is a Good Thing. I love 'em all. :)

For close range: Semi-auto
For long range: Bolt
For intermediate range: Lever
I think pumps belong on shotguns. ;)
At least...the above is the excuse I'll give my woman when I go to buy a bolt and lever to go with my semi.

Lever. And as in so many things about firearms, I can't quite say why. My lever action rifles just feel right. It's like the HS200 .vs Glock issue. Both good guns, both accurate and reliable, but the HS2K just feels right.
