Tony from Finland

I was leafing through Metsästys & Kalastus (that would be Hunting & Fishing in English) the other day. They had a list of rifles sold in Finland. One of them was this pretty weird and funny looking little thing: U.S. Survival Rifle (http://www.henryrepeating.com/survival.html). Didn't cost too much either. ;) I've never seen or heard of one before, does someone out there have experience with these? What kind of rifle is this in reality? (And most importantly, is there room in the stock for a suppressor as well when the weapon is dissassembled and stored in the stock? ;) :D ) Just curious... (Although like I said, it didn't seem to cost an arm and a leg. Perhaps I might be able to squeeze it into next years budget if it's worth it... ;) )

Tony, I had experience with one of the rifles, back when Armalite made them. It was a neat little rifle that fit well behind the seat of my Toyota pickup (when the .30 carbine was not there). Not knowing the size of your Finnish suppressor, I would not know if one would fit in the stock or not. Perhaps if you shortened the barrel first. IIRC, the barrel nut would loosed with use but not to a great degree, just enough to throw off the accuracy. The sights were nothing to brag about either.
You asked "What kind of rifle is it in reality?" It is a take down, semi-automatic, magazine fed .22 rifle. LOL No target rifle but something that beats no gun at all.
I may have to get another one and stuff it under the seat of the Suburban.

Tony, this is the latest incarnation of the old AR-7. These have been built by several companies over the years. Its a neat little plinker and could be used for small game at reasonable distances. Just don't expect it to be a tack driver.
The storage space in the stock is pretty tight. I seriously doubt if you could get a supressor into it.
I can't really say anything about the qauilty of the Henry version, but previous ones by other companies have been good.
I saw one of these at the gun auction in Springfield on Sunday. I even considered bidding on it until I saw that it was made in Brooklyn, N.Y.! The rifle is a damned yankee!!! :p

Oh yes. I read and heard that these were apparently issued to aircraft pilots in the U.S. military at some point? Doesn't sound like a very bright idea to me. Wouldn't a larger caliber handgun be a better defensive firearm?
Okay, so it "isn't a tack driver". Meaning what exactly? Won't hit a barn when fired inside the barn? Or a round might occasionally slip to the 9-ring at 50 meters?
I don't hunt and I'm not looking for a gun to store in my car or anything like that. Does it have any use outside of being a survival/defensive tool? (Informal shooting, plinking, etc.)
(Although I think if I'm buying another .22 rifle it'll be the lever-action Winchester... Still, that AR-7 is an unusual weapon and I'm curious about it. :) )
Jim, there are several sources of suppressors in Finland. But I think the one I'd use would be similar to the one my girlfriend has for her Ruger. I took some pics when we were in Lapland, I'll see if I can ever get them developed if there are any that might be worth posting here. But roughly speaking it doubles the lenght of the 4-and-something inch barrel of her Mk.II. So sounds like it won't fit. How tight is the fit width-wise? The suppressor will be a bit wider than the barrel, after all...
Hmm... I do like that lever action Winchester. Still, this would be a neat little project just for the hell of it... :D Damn, I really need to become rich. :p Too many guns, way too little money...
Tony- Have you seen one of these? Its a M6 survival rifle. The over barrel is 22lr, and the under is 410 shotgun. There a great little camping rifle.

Tony the ar7 is a nice little plinker, no not a tack driver but it will shoot to POC (Point of Chipmunk). it is a fun gun to shoot but the barrel is a sleeved carbon type of thing. I wonder if a silencer would work it might crush the barrel.
Darth.
Come to the dark side, but for goodness sake bring a flash light :D

stu, that looks weird! :p Not too pretty, though.
Darth, what do you mean with the silencer possibly crushing the barrel?
...And just how big a group is POC at 50 meters? :p
