I have an L1A1 .308 semi auto rifle. When I bought it for $399 several years ago it had a funky thumb hole stock on it which since then I have located the original "furniture" and made the change. Could someone explain to me exactly what I have as opposed to a FAL? I assume it's a legalized version for import at that time? Could somebody give me a little more info?

BigDaddy - I believe that L1A1 is simply the British designation for the FAL rifle.
I had heard that there are small differences between the two, but at heart they are all FAL's.

They are both FAL's, but the the British Commonwealth countries used the L1Al, which is an "inch pattern" FAL, as opposed to a "metric pattern". I'm pretty sure that the magazines are not interchangeable; don't know about other parts. Most of the L1A1's that I've seen here were refubished Canadian weapons made redundant when the Canadian Armed forces went to the M-16A2 but the British have gone to a .223 also so I'm sure some of their old L1Al's are floating around too. The Springfield FAL clone was metric and there is a US company (name escapes me) making them now in metric.
