JoeBob 1901 - As a VERY general rule when you are choosing a hunting load you want to use a bullet that has expansion capabilities.

FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) bullets do not offer this capability and are used for military and training purposes.

The size and power of the cartridge you choose should be suitable for the game you intend to hunt.

Since you appear to be at the beginning of the learning curve, your best bet is to do some reading. These two books should help answer a lot of your questions:

Cartridges Of The World - 9th Edition by Frank Barnes and The Lyman 47th Reloading Handbook.

JoeBob,

As Cliff said, FMJ was intended to be a less lethal round and used buy the Military...like there was a liablity.
May self...I load or reload BTST for my .308's.
Accuracy is affected in the tail end of the bullet and abnomalities..Boat tails don't have that problem

If you're shooting paper it doesn't matter what type of bullet you use. If it's for hunting, you want one that will create a large wound, so the critter dies quicker and doesn't suffer. FMJ doesn't expand, so it will make a hole the size of the bullet all the way through, and leave the critters you mentioned still on their feet and able to run down the nearest ravine. If you don't want to carry the critter back up out of the ravine, you want a bullet that expands on impact. Although I have seen hollow point bullets for the 8mm Mauser, most of the hunting bullets I've seen for that caliber, have been soft point. There are also various shapes within each grouping, such as the Boat-tail (BT) that Carston mentioned. I just did a quick study of my midway (http://www.midwayusa.com) catalog, and it appears that Remington makes a Pointed Soft Point (PSP) 185 grain bullet for the 8mm. I don't know how hard this would be to find as loaded ammo though. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. We're always willing to answer questions.
Eric

What a way to go....Turtlenaper....
I think you did good in running off a new shooter, a 12 yr old can own a gun if that was given to him by a Parent Figure.

He can also use, carry and shoot the same gun with his father or parent type figure present

Why does a member of a gun board discourge ownership?

Joebob.... As previously advised, there is a huge amount of literature on cartridges/bullets. Check out them books for really good info.

For your 8mm.......

There is plenty of surplus 8mm ammo on the market right now. Most from Turkey and other east european origin. All is plenty cheap, and reliable. Although Turk ammo is for the most part considered to have corrosive primers. This will mean you will need to do a very good job of cleaning the gun. Go to a gun show, and buy a case. You won't regret it.

I mention the surplus 8mm ammo because it is so cheap, and as such you can practice shooting a whole bunch. It is perfect for shooting paper targets.. for sure. It is all FMJ ammo.

A good general deer hunting round is any of the regular U.S. made hunting ammo. I have seen fantastic results with simple Remington Core Lockt ammo. It is readily found at any Walmart and is also cheap. Not as cheap as military surplus, but still inexpensive when you consider, once you site in your rifle, you are good to go.
The corelockt ammo will make a sizeable exit hole on the deer. As such it may not be desired if you hunt coyote, and want to preserve the hide. FMJ will bring down a coyote, but alas, I am not an authority on proper rounds for coyote hunting. I know most folks use a smaller balistic round, but hey, 8mm will work too...

As with any shooting.....just be sure of your of what is behind that target.

Good luck with that 8mm mauser. Let us know what kind it is. I own a Turk mauser and a Yugo mauser. Great rifles.

first of all i have grown up around firearms just not in the house-single parent family-my uncle and grandpa have like 20+ firearms each at least. Now i have owned a BB gun since i was 9 i think and i have since passed it down to my brother who is 10. We practice high safety in everything we do. We are in a shooting sports program in 4-H which u have to take a class sort of like hunters safety and pass it to get a certificate to shoot in meets. I shoot archery (recurve and compound) and air rifle. I am hoping they will bring in 22 competition so i can use my remingtoin 522-now if ur saying i should not own a gun..... then u just singled out about 75% of all hunters/shooters. most people were brought up on BB guns and 22s at aruond my age or younger. Just saying. Now this mauser i have is a yugo and getting it for 70 dollars for v-good. I have seen the remington ammo and the other commercial ammo but they dont shoot as fast or as hard from every source i have found. U know about the JS and the J barrel thing right? The other loads are alot hotter than the commercial due to the commercial dont want to hurt the really old J barrel muasers. So the commercial shoot lower than the surplus, generally speaking. I have seen for sale on auction sights such as auctionarms.com and gunbroker.com and have noticed some sphp and some hollow points.. I think i will use the surplus FMJ for target at our RANGE we belong to turtle. And i will probably use sphp for deer when I will be hunting with my uncle. and FMJ for coyote so i dont totally demolish the fello when i am hunting coyote with my friend and his dad. thanks for all those that give me information not tell me that i shouldnt own a gun... thanks!

Howdy JoeBob
Well you are from my part of the world. I'm Northern Ok. We do things different I guess, in our world. Anybody that reads my posts know that I reload. The one reloaded shell that I am most proud of hangs on the wall with a set of horns from an 8 point White Tail. It was taken by my neighbors 12 year old daughter. A one shot kill at 70 yrds. The 8 mm. is a fun gun. Its been to long ago for me to rember the bullet weight or powder charge but we used to hunt Jack Rabbits with a 8 mm. loaded with cast lead bullets. This would be a good varmit load as we made them from wheel weights and there was no expanson. Great for saving fur. If you get into reloading keep this in mind. Now go take a nap and we will talk again later. Good luck and good hunting.

JoeBob, on behalf of the staff and members of FFF I'd like to offer our apologizes for how you've been treated.
You see boards like our are sometimes invaded by trolls. Trolls are folks who come here just to make trouble. Since your writing style greatly resembles that of our resident pet troll, there was some concern that you may be a troll too. However, it seems now that you are exactly who you say you are. A young man interested in hunting and shooting.
So please accept our apologizes and stick around. Gun owners take great pleasure in passing on our knowledge to the younger generation. You have much to learn and we have plenty of good folks here who are willing to teach.

Ok Folks, the boy is legit. Now, cut him some slack. OK?

My comment to JoeBob about taking a nap was meant as a joke. If it was taken any other way I am sorry. In JoeBobs and my part of the world a 14 year old shooter already has several years of hunting and shooting experence. The 12 year old girl making a one shot kill with one of my reloads is a true story. We start our kids out at shooting sports early because everybody does have a gun or guns in every home in our county. We are smart enough to know they are going to be interested in fire arms in their homes so we start gun safty training at an early age. You know what? It works. To Joe Bob. Come down to the Great Salt Plains and we will see that you get to hunt. Ask anyone in Nescatunga for the nescatungarat and they will know how to locate me. Again if my remarks were taken wrong I am sorry.

Hey..as for my reference to 12, that was when I recieved my 1st rifle and shot gun for my father....In my opinion Joebob....Here's to ya. I would rather have you learning safety the way you are than the way just as many disregaurd firearm safety.
Just remember the safety on the weapon, keep your finger out of the trigger gaurd until ready and alway listen to the safety located between your ears.

Happy and safe shooting

JoeBob, glad to have you over here. We are here to help you answer your questions. It is really good to see young man asking questions about guns. I won't be able to help out on answering but I can say this there will be someone here that will. I was very young when my dad bought me a double barrel .410 and took me rabbit hunting, I did scare a few rabbits out of the brush and shot them, but after that period in life I was never around guns much, we had like shotguns in the house but they were never used much, they were more like family looms that was handed down from the family. But now I know a little more about them and now own a couple of 9mm handguns and get to shoot them once in awhile. So we are glad you decided to come to this board to get your questions answered and I'll assure you there will be some to help you. If you ever have any questions about what's going on you can e-mail me Baldmonkey58@aol.com or Gunscustom@aol.com and we will get back with you as soon as possible.

JoeBob 1901 - When I mentioned "beginning of the learning curve", I was referring to your apparent knowledge of the various types of cartridges and bullet types.

The nature of your question allowed me little room to assume anything else. ;)

Personally, I learned to shoot a rifle when I was 10 years old and had my own before I was 12. I think you're plenty old enough.

I strongly suggest you check out the books I mentioned. Cartridges and their various specs and loadouts can be very confusing at first. I seem to spend more time reading about these things than I do shooting!

another thing... if i can drive a car and people say its the biggest responsibilty till i get married.. why would a gun by a problem ;) lol-as long as i use it responsibly and safely-but ya i have been called a troll before... at knivesforum.com or something of that sort-asked if i could conceal carry a knife to the range we shoot at because its sorta out in the boondocks-18 miles from town and we have seen about 7 deer for a total of 12 sightings in the same 4 mile radius and also a red fox but ya i understand and thanks to grayfox i understand the situation completely-thanks

BTW where do u live in relation to grand lake-my mothers friend has a cabin down there and we go down there every few years in the fall and its soooo awesome absolutly gorgeous-and fun fishing for carp/drum in a boat dock when its raining :) ;)

btw the salt flats are awesome-went there about 3-4 years ago and reaally cool-those hour-glass crystals are cool and i still have alot-thanks ;) bye

geez i keep remembering stuff so i keep editing lol-is great salt lake the lake thats about 5 feet deep at the deepest-we stayed in some cabins down there a while back and fished/swam in that lake-really cool-found a 4 foot dead blue catfish on the shore-didnt catch anything but only had stinkbait and of course... i was only 10 :)-but at grand lake i caught a 20 pound drum-really big for a 70 pound kid lol-and some carp/bullhead cat/and the occasional bluegill but we only caught them on bread-like 2 loafs-only thing i could get a bite on

JoeBob, your reference to the j/js bore thing is the key to why the ammo makers don't load 8mm to its potential. The "j" bore is .005" smaller in inside diameter than the "js" bore. This would raise the pressure created by firing to a level that would be beyond dangerous for any firearm. On the bright side, the j bore doesnt' apply to a 98 Mauser. The older ones (93's and 95's) had the "j" bore. They also come with "js" bores, having been rebarreled at the various arsenals. Because there are alot of these out there, the ammo makers have to load for them not because of barrel problems, but because these older actions aren't as strong as the 98.

Given a 98 action in good shape, the 8mm can be handloaded to be the equivalent of a .30-06. Its only problem is that it suffers from a lack of decent bullets in comparison to the .30 calibers. A common and popular conversion is to rechamber it to 8mm-06. This is done by re-reaming the chamber to accept .30-06 brass that has had the case mouth opened up to 8mm.

ENJOY!!
