Howdy, y'all,
I'm considering getting a youth rifle. Not for me :), but it's "for the children". My boy Daniel really enjoyed shooting the rifles over the weekend. He does have a hard time trying to hold them, though, due to weight and the stock length. Also, my daughter has the same problems. Then there's the 4 (almost 5) YO, who'll get to use the rifle when he's big enough.
I don't want to drop a whole bunch of $$$ on it, but I'd like to get something nice. I'd like to know what folks think of the Marlin 15YN (http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/boltAction22/15YN.htm) and the CZ452 (http://www.cz-usa.com/pro/detail.php?P=23). From perusing some auction boards, both of these rifles are in the same price range +/- a bit. I'd personally lean more to the Marlin because I already have two of them and like them. However, the CZ is a bit lighter.
Are there any other rifles that fall in this category that I'm missing?
And I don't wanna lay out the cash for an Anschutz :) This rifle's gonna be for kids learning how to shoot. Not for shooting the hairs off of fleas :D If the kids get good enough to where they want to compete, then I'll look at something else.
Thanks,
-- John

I don't know about the CZ, but my boys started with the Marlin 15YN and its a great little rifle. The accuracy is outstanding and its smaller dimensions are great for small children. I took it to EOSM I and basicly just turned it over to Darth and Jedi's 6 year old daughter for the weekend. She had such a good time with it that Dad got her one when they returned home.
Both of my boys have outgrown it now. But, I still have it and ocassionaly still shoot it. I plan to keep it for any grandchildren the future might bring. ;)
My little sister started on a Chipmunk from I believe oregon arms. They aren't terribly expensive, but, better yet is the Davy Crickett Which is around $120 comes with it's own little case and is sized about like the old daisy red rider (maybe a touch smaller) It is plenty accurate and is even fun for big folks to shoot, Id even reccomend them for non-pistleros to carry coon hunting. All my boys like it and shoot it well and my cousin got one fo rhis kids and they reportedly do well with it. I can't remember who exactly makes it but, most supply places are carrying it so if you ask for it by name your gun shop should find it for you. There are several stock styles to choose from and maybe even a stainless version.

That's just a little bit less than the Marlin. They had it listed for $109. I didn't see anything under Oregon/Chipmunk for around that price  Is this the rifle you were thinking of? http://www.chipmunkrifle.com/
Oh, and regarding the rifles in your pic, Yeah, right...Them things is broken. The front sight done been snapped off! I saw those same rifles at WallyMart, right next to the plastic cowboy belts & holsters, green army men and squirt guns :D :D :D
The Savages look interesting, too. I'll have to make sure they're not too heavy. The lightest one was something like 5lbs, and the Marlin & the CZ are 4.25 and 4lbs, respectively. I'll have to check out that Chipmunk rifle. Their web site says it's about 2.5 pounds.

My middle son has a Savage Mark II Y, a 10 shot clip fed bolt action. He loves it. I let him learn to use the iron sights, then I put a 4X scope on for him. I sighted the scope in, and in no time, he was hitting the X. Great little gun. The only problem we've had is the knob fell off the bolt. I wrote Savage, and they sent me 2 at no charge. I used lock tight on the new one, and it's been on for about 2 years. Now, he wants a Ruger 10-22. Little brother may have to "borrow" the Savage.
I don't think anyone mentioned a Henry. I think they make a lever gun in youth model. I almost bought one of these instead of the Savage. You may want to check on these.

Oh, my rifle on the left with the broken off sights and the Wally World price tag shoots group like this http://photoasa.com/disk2/3063/87927_110FPgroup.jpg
But at 15 pounds I think you would have to carry it to the bench for them

I thought I was getting a deal without the sight thingies. The guy told me he would knock 10% off the price

No problem. I'll check around a bit locally to see what turns up.

Hey, I saw that one of them office supply superstores was having a sale on single hole hole punchers. If I look close enough in yer picture, I can see where you folded it along one of them black lines and, click-click-click. Trouble is, I don't understand how they could poke holes that leave fuzzies around them. hmm... :D
BTW, could my boy try your WallyWorld rifle? He loves to smear peanut butter & jelly all over his face... :D :D :D
Taking tongue out of cheek now, what type of ammo were you shooting when you nailed those groups? Distance? Indoor or outdoor? If outdoor, temp & wind. And, the biggie, how much of that Savage is still original? :D

Oh John..
That target was after the first 10 round of 147 MS ball. I was gonna go home and clean it but the range got way busy and I didn't want to pepper others with AR brass.
So after the barrel cooled...I broke out the cheap 150 grn UMC stuff.
As for how much of the rifle is still Savage.....I changed the stock, trigger group and that is it....Leupold rings, SA 1st gen 4-14x56 scope.
Distance was 100 yards....
If you are in Utah....By all means your kids can shoot it. Heck, I will let them loose with a few AR's and an M1A.

Oh boy....I just saw that you are stuck in PRK with Cliff and are darn near limited to the size of rocks in your wrist rockets.
