Favorite Longarm?

I've asked about favorite authors, I've read about favorite handguns, but now I've gotta know...

Which one of your babies is your favorite?
Hows come?
Is it a shooter?
Have you fixed it up better than when you got it?

Whats your story?
If you can post photo's, please do (wish I was set up to at this point. Soon [I keep promising myself])

Mine (you ask?)

Easy. "Sven", my 6.5 Swedish Mauser '96 made in Oberndorf 1900.
Why (you ask?) He's so fine. Recoil? Hah! Accurate? Oh my golly yes. Fun to shoot? Could do it all day long, or until I run out of ammo, which usually comes first. "Sven" is more fun than "Ole", his little M-96/38 cousin. What a pair. One is more "Cherman" and the other is "Oh Ya a Svede al'right" from the house of "Son of Gustav".

The only thing I'd do to either of them might be to add a "Mojo" (as an aside that's also my cats name) rear sight in lieu of the ladder, but that borders on sacrilige. Darn these eyes anyway!

Your turn. :D

My favorite long gun would be my Winchester 'Illinois Sesquisentenial' Model 1894 in 30-30. It's a shooter and just plain fun. The original assault rifle.

My favorite right now I guess is still my Colt lightweight sporter AR-15. i sa right now because I bought a STG-58 a few months ago and I think it will take over once I've shot it a little more,(mainly I like the 308 Caliber better).

The AR is not as it came though no major smithing was done. It has a 4-12x50 Simmons variable scope on a side of the handle mount that keeps it very low, hte other side of the mount is left open for the detachable night vision scope I got for it (an Aries Mk-4, 1st gen russian tube). It has a Vortec flash hider. A Boonie Packer Redi-Mag that holds a spare mag right side up next to the one being used all ya do is realese the mag and swap very quick. It'll shoot clover leaf groups all day long with 75 gr, ammo and well inside an inch with 62 gr. Wolf cheap stuff. i still want to try a colapsible stock on it but, it's short and convienient now. And I have alot of mags for it.

If I could just afford an AR-10 and dress it out the same I'd be very very happy.

Baba Louie - Oh, Yah... dos Svedes are nice! :)

Here are two of mine -

http://www.saranap.com/images/MVC-014S.JPG

The one on the left is my favorite - she's a 1942 Springfield Armory M1. A collector piece? No. A shooter? Oh my, yes. Her name is Big Dog. I haven't done anything to her other than apply several coats of tung oil to the stock. No need TO do anything to her!

The one on the right is an M1A that I recently acquired. All I've done (so far) is replace the op rod spring, and swap out the op rod spring guide for one made by BPT. It's also a good shooter. That 20 round mag sticks out like an ugly wart, but there's something about having 20 rounds of 7.62 NATO on hand. ;)

When all is said and done, it's Big Dog that puts the biggest smile on my face when I shoot her. :D

Whoa Cliff C;

Soooooo Nice

Big Dog looks bad (or good) and I am a little envoius. I had a Blue Sky Garand that was a piece of #### and unloaded it. Maybe I should have rebarreled it (a really bad bore).
When I go back to Mizzou my Dad lets me shoot either his "Tanker" or his Springfield if I've been a good boy.
There's something about a 30.06 M1 that, I don't know, makes me feel like a "Big Boy", ya know? Serious fun.
My uncle David was/is a Marine and used to let me shoot his M-14 (yes, it was a "real" M-14 - he was stationed at Lejuene at the time) and all I can say is !!!WOOOOOOWWWWW!!!)
I've been saving my peso's until I too can afford such a wonderful toy (er I mean tool) as your M-1A. Maybe in 2002 if I'm real lucky and win the lottery.
So tell me... How do they shoot?
I've shoot my Swede M-96 at 700 yards (paces) and hit a 4'x8' piece of plywood that I could barely see. Open sights and all. But I hit it. Once I got the range down (took 10 rds. to find the real range as opposed to the numbers on the ladder sight). No recoil (if you know the 6.5x55) so to speak.
I forgot to mention my Ljungman (M-42). A bit longer than the Garand but in 6.5 w/ 10 rds. oh so fine. (but a pain to clean; did Gene Stoner really mean to use that darn gas port?)
Wish I could post pictures, but I'll just have to look at yours.
Nice, nice, nice.

Baba Louie - So you've shot an M-14, huh? Now it's MY turn to be envious! What I wouldn't give to get my hands on the "real deal". :)

As for how they shoot, I only have access to a 100 yard range and, on rare occasions, a 200 yard range for club shoots. No wandering out into the desert in my area. ;)

With Big Dog, if I take my time between shots, I can shoot 3" groups all day using 8" black as my aiming point. If I go semi-rapid fire (1 shot per second) I can usually keep things within 5". This is using milsurp M2 ball.

With the M1A, right out of the box I shot a 2.5" group. I'm convinced the rifle is capable of 1 MOA. I haven't had time to put more than 100 rounds through her. :(

I would LOVE to have the opportunity to shoot both of them at 800 yards or so.

Nice going hitting that plywood at 700 yards - at that distance the front sight tends to cover a lot of target. I do love iron sights - a lot of people seem to forget (or don't know) how effective they can be at long range.

If you can see it, you can hit it. :D

I suppose it would depend on the application.
But for almost all applications I find myself going to my 1894 Marlin chambered in .44 mag.
I've shortened the barrel to 16 inches and the stock to just long enough that I do not bump myself in the nose under recoil. A shooter with longer arms can not shoot it without slamming themselves in the nose. I also thinned the forearm and stock as much as is prudent to take off even more weight.
I like it for a number of reasons, including the fact that most of my handguns are .44's and the interchangability of ammo is handy. But my primary reason is for the compactness of it and the fact that it shoulders fast and swings well.

Yeah, the M-14 experience was back in '68 down at LeJuene with a bunch of my uncle David's buddies (and my Dad). They all despised the new M-16.
An interesting thing tho'. Every one of their rifles had the flash suppresor removed. The unit armorer had cleanly removed them and recrowned the muzzle. They said that in the jungle over there that when the rifle hit the deck quickly (with the Marine behind it) that sometimes the front end would get tweaked a little then the accuracy was shot. And everyone knows that Marines take their riflery (?a word?) very seriously. Specially if someone is shooting back.

Anyway, I got to put up the buttplate over the shoulder (in the prone position) and let her rip. It was over so fast I couldn't beleive it. My shoulder was black and blue for a good week. But boy did I like it. My uncles got a picture of me with this sh%$ eating grin as I came off the line. Didn't hit a thing either. I was 13 at the time.
Always wanted a Fed Ord. real deal. Someday a Springfield M1A. Soon I hope.
A boy can dream can't he?

I also got to go thru their Vietnam Village and look over tunnels, booby traps, weapons cache, etc. Some of the booby trap displays were... well, I'm glad I was still a kid and didn't get to experience any of them in real life.

Humm, It would be a tough question between 4 AR's, M1A and My Savage 110FP...but you said Long so that narrows that down...AR are all 16 inch barrels.

I like the M1a just haven't got to shot it enough yet http://photoasa.com/disk2/3063/88193_SAM1A.jpg

but for a tack driver I just gotta go with the Savage...it is in the process of being cammo'd

Stay safe and alert.....I am wondering where to go next year while the Olympic's are here in Utah

When I want to shoot rifles just for pure enjoyment, I always reach for a .22 RF. Out of those, I'll pick my Winchester 9422. Darn thing is so accurate its almost boring. ;) Nothing is more fun than a nice afternoon, a good .22 and a brick to burn. :D

Gray Fox, I couldn't have said it better myself, I shoot a 10/22 that I have doctored up a bit and it will shoot a lot better than I'm capable of. yes sir that's real fun.
