Okay, guys, just visiting from CQC...
Since good ol' California decided to put all my rifles on the assault weapons list, I'm looking at a lever action assault rifle.
First, what do you recommend?
Second, what is the best way to lever a round into the chamber without giving away your position if you're proned out?
I used to see guys roll over on their sides and crank the lever.
I've seen guys laying prone lever the action straight down.
What's the technique of choice?

LaSur,
Instead of a lever action, have you given any thought to an AR Style Pump Rifle? They take standard M-16/AR mags, and since they aren't semi-auto, they are usually not effected by gun bans. DPMS makes one called the Panther.
Sure would be a whole lot easier pumping your rile in a prone position, rather than cranking a lever gun.

Well, I'll just be dogged. That is a new one on me. Cool.....I think, but sad at the same time. :(
LA, I personally like a lever gun and feel well armed with one. Opinions as to which is better varies depending on whom you are talking with at the time. I like the Marlin while others like the Winchester. Browning and some of the others get mentioned from time to time but most people are either Marlin or Winchester.
For maximum capacity, urban use and plinking factor the pistol caliber guns are the best. I prefer the .44 simply because it matches my handguns. But the .357 lever guns are great to and give you a few more rounds and cheaper practice ammo.
As to technique, with practice you can lever a lever action from any position. If you lever it slow while canted it may jamb. But if you lever it smartly it will work in about any practical postition.
Wish you were coming to EOSMII. There will be plenty of lever guns there, including a few of mine.

Now that is a cool idea, different but cool  I may have to look into one someday, like I need another darn AR.
As for Lever guns, I don't know...I have a Savage 300 F but I haven't shot it in over 25 years.
LA, geez...glad you could stop in, I haven't popped in the Close Quarters for a bit, running my butt off trying to pay for toys and no time to shoot them. I will have to stop in and visit, after all we had some pretty seriously humorous post going :D
But that Pump AR is something you ought to look into and I wonder then if you could have 20 or 30 round mags....It's a pump

I have a copy of Jim Crews book "From Behind the Line". It is a primer for firearms instructors. I know there is a section in that book on using a lever action as an Urban rifle. I'll look through that later tonight and see if there is anything in there.
As to caliber, there are two schools of thought, pistol vs rifle. You get more rounds with the .357 or .44. But you get more stopping power by going to something like a 30-30. If I am at the point I need a rifle, I want all the fire power I can muster. So I keep the 30-30 around here. :)
But then... I got grandpa's 1963 Winchester Model 94. :D

Gus - That pump action AR is ALSO illegal here in CA. ALL members of the Panther A-15 line of rifles are defined as "assault weapons."
LA - I can't add anything to the advice you've already received about lever action rifles.
However, given the availability of semi-auto's that are still legal (M1 Garand, M1A, M1 Carbine, Ruger mini-14, Ruger .44 carbine, etc.), I'm curious why you've decided on a lever action.
Totally your business of course, but I feel an obligation to mention alternatives. :)

You've got to be kidding! A pump gun is on a ban list? Oh well, at least here in Nazi Jersey, I could add a flash suppressor, bayonet, and 40 round mags, and still be legal. I have to keep my semi-auto mags blocked to 15 rounds, but I could put a drum on the pump gun. I guess Kalifornia really is worse than Jersey. Man, I never would have believed it.

Gus - I spent a year in NJ in 1984. Lived in N. Brunswick (nice country) and worked in Hackensack (a pesthole).
Hated the summers... in summer, hills are NOT supposed to be green, dammit! They're supposed to be brown... and burning. ;)
Seriously, here in CA we still don't have to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun.
On the socialist scale, I think CA and NJ are in a dead heat. :(
