VERY happy with weekend gunshow acquisition....

This was probably the lamest (smallest) gunshow I've ever attended - it was pathetic. BUT, you can occasionally find some gems even at lame ones.

Witness this 1917 Enfield I picked up. Actually, this pic doesn't do it justice - this baby is 95-98%, I'd say. Wood has some nice grain features, and bluing is excellent; barrell is also very "bright and tight." I'm quite pleased - I don't think I'll shoot it, even though I want to - well, maybe a few rounds. But's it's a nice collector piece.

Wait, nevermind - forgot you can't post pics here anymore. :( Dang, gotta get some webspace. Maybe I can talk Redrum into hosting the pic for me again. :)

Now, someone tell me if this is true: The ol' boy I bought it from (same vendor I bought my K31 from, turns out) says that the 1917 Enfield is the rifle that Alvin York actually carried, NOT a 1903 Sprgfld as is depicted in the movie. True? I sure hope so, because this is what pushed me over the edge to buy it - I *had* to have Sgt York's rifle - lol!!!

I believe he is correct, York used the 1917 Enfield.

Futo, congrats on the 1917, been looking for one in this part of the country but the price for them is quite unreasonable.

Sgt. York carried a P-17 Enfield in WWI. More dogfaces carried the P-17 than carried the 1903.

Picture of mine is over in our 'PHOTOS" room.

Mine is a Remington that had been "sporterized" badly. It was my father in law's rifle and when I got it, I bought al restoration parts from Numrich. The barrel had been cut off by two inches, so I located a brand new (in cosmo) GI barrel from 1940 and had it installed along with the front sight group.

It now looks like the day it came off the assembly line in 1918. It shoots like a dream but it doesn't get fired often. A few collectors have oohed and aahed over it, but it's not for sale at any price.

Yes, it WAS pricey - but then again, not as much as most '03's. It was $525. :-/ But, the blue book said $500 if 95%, and $550 if 98%, and I thought it closer to 98%, but I could have been mistaken about judging the condition - I don't know the exact meaning of 98%, so I may have paid too much. :dunno:

This one is a Remington-Eddystone - I understand the Winchester's are slightly more valuable - the blue book said add 10% if Win manufacture.

OK, redrum, Thanks! I'll send it to yas for posting.

DocWilly - glad you got yours back in original form. I'm through sporterizing milsurps. I feel terrible about sporterizing the two I did, before I was "enlightened". But this is is most definitely staying original, and not going to get shot much, if at all. Popeye et al, thanks for the info on WW1 grunts - so tell me, what's the difference 'tween a doughboy and a dogface?

P.S. The barrel itself is stamped 1918, so I *think* this means that it could not have seen a lot of war action; therefore probably tighter. When in 1918 did the war end? :dunno: Edited: Looks like it ended Nov 11, 1918, so it definitely could have seen a lot of action....

No difference.

Most P-17s were arsenal reworked after the end of hostitities. Therefore 1918 barrel dates.

If it hasn't been polished, reblued and the wood refinished; you stole it.
