I am taking what I said back cauase I didn't realize what this poll was about. I am sorry Redrum. Thank you for pointing that out to us. I feel stupid for even falling for this. I don't own an AK but if I did my AK would not assult anyone either.

I'm sorry...but not one of my rifles have ever "assaulted" anyone...hence I cannot participate in your incessant polls...."assault rifles"...what are you thinking asking a question like that around here?????:dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

"assault" anything is a "gun-grabbing-ignorant" liberal term use to put fear and doubt into the sheeples minds and hearts so that the hypocritical Libs can wander in and ban anything that they label "assault". Now...rather than calling them "assault" rifles, you can use the alternative term as HDR (Home Defense Rifle). Ok...maybe and AR or AK is a little much for a Home Defense Rifle, but then again...the term assault is way overboard as well...

I voted for the AK, even though I've never owned or fired one, and have owned sereval AR variants.
There are more AK's and AK clones in existence than any other gun design. It has a deservedly good reputation for reliability under the most adverse conditions, even with poor or non-existant maintenance.
I'd LOVE to get my hands on one of the Valmet clones. These Swedish copies were probably the best of all, because they duplicated the original design in every respect except that the receiver was machined from forged steel, and not made from stampings.

what Rich said. the AK wins. You can give an AK to an otherwise uncivilized (what we consider uncivilized, whatever that means) tribesman in say, africa, and he can use it and maintain it for years. give him an AR, and i doubt it would be much good for long.

BTW an "Assault weapon" under correct terms is a select fire (read full auto) firearm, and since only certain individuals can posses such fire arms (military, LE, and special permit holders), i can only relate to the semi auto HDR/SUR that us civies can own.
I didnt vote, because i believe everyone should have at least one of each, mine are both reliable and accurate. No complaint wth either one.

Bulletproof, As I said up above , I like them but just never got around to buying one! I picked up on my Romanian AK because of price and it was available at the time. I have no regrets! :wine:
Right now I'm going after a Thompson, but there is a Bushmaster in my future!

Is the monniker
Mil-Spec Replica Rifle PC enough?
If so, I voted for the AK's since there is a Romanian
SAR-1 Mil-Spec Replica Rifle in my gun vault.

I voted AK-47... it's the only one you can get that truly is an "assault rifle" and yes, it would be fully auto. The AR-15 is just a semi-auto so I couldn't vote for that :D.
Bulletproof, don't take it personnel, sometimes it's the semantics that get to you.
I got to fire a fully auto AK and M-16 at the CATM range in GA. You could (and we did) throw the AK into the mud, rolled it around in the sand, and then picked it up and that puppy just fired away. You throw the M-16 into the mud and then you clean it because the locking bolt won't make contact and then it won't fire :(.
I hate to admit it but the Russians knew their stuff when it comes to weapons. The only reason that they aren't the super power is because of their government choice, they didn't have the money to keep up with us but if they came at us full force (back then), we would have really had a war on our hands :OMG: .
Now, for a real American made rifle w/full auto, the M1A and the Thompson (of which I've read LnL's post and I'm green with envy, lucky person you :D :D).

I love my AKs and would grab one first for an urban gun battle but there is a Bushy in my (hopefully near) future also.
I like my son's AR (Bushy Nat'l match) but it's a little rich for my blood so I'll go with the standard bull barrel version. I want to buy the Bushmaster lower and work up.

I own a Bushmaster carbine and love it. Want an AK, and may pick one up at the gunshow this weekend. A person can never have to many battle rifles.

Good move on buying the SAR-1 ! They are getting to be as scarce as hens teeth these days!!! All I see are WARA-10 's....
I like me SAR-1...and I have been investigating AR's here lately...It seems that more and more 3-gun matches are popping up and although I do ok with the AK, I think I would try my hand with an AR.
and Bulletproof...don't take anything that is said around here personal...take everything with a grain of salt...

What Red said, Bulletproof. Dont' take anything around here too personally...hey, we're a bunch a "gun nuts," doncha know?!
Semantics....it can drive you crazy.
How about "military look-alike"?
How about "gun enthusiasts" or "firearms afficionados"?

I wasn't upset or offended or anything I was just trying to start a discussion of these rifles..
It really depends. To launch a true discussion versus what I like/feel.....
I have both and I really like both of them. As far as choosing one over the other, it would really depend on its intended use. If you want a rifle to take to the range that is fairly accurate but could be used in a "survival" situation then the AR is a great choice. They tend to be more accurate than the AK's and are still suitable for a defensive role.
If you want a rifle that would be reliable for use under adverse conditions in a "survival" situation then I would choose the AK. It is not as accurate but it is nearly indestructable. I have never managed to jam mine in many thousands of rounds of use and the simple design makes for easy tear down and cleaning.
The AR requires more pampering to perform reliably and the overall design is less robust. Plus, they tend to run at least $400 more than the AK variants and ammunition and magazines are more costly.
If you do choose to get a Romanian AK variant, make sure you get a SAR-1 or SAR-2 depending on your preference of calibers. Stay away from the WASR's, the examples I have seen are sloppily made, without exception.
