I have trouble making my monthly CMP shoot (e.g. it's this Sat and they also opened Sockeye for this Sat only). So I want to start some off the bench email matches on my new online home.

Would anyone at FFF be interested in some email matches in regards to anything besides benchrest? No disrespect intended to the BR guys, and if you are not interested or physically cannot do Offhand, Silhoutte, 3P, or CMP Sporter Rimfire please just skip this thread

I am a pretty decent offhand shooter and I encourage participation in shooting off the bench. I seldom give advice on shooting, because there are millions of experts online however I am an advocate of practicing!

If ya wanna play just post a reply saying which discipline. If you are not familiar with any of them but would like to try - just say so.

Edited to add - I am headed outside to practice for the next hour (or two).

My offhand with a rifle could use some work but I am to old and fat to do 3P, don't have a place to shoot Silhoutte, I have no idea what CMP Sporter Rimfire is but I could learn.

I would like to do something off hand with 22 pistols, I just do not shoot mine much but I think I would if I had an email match to do it in.

Let me know

Hi Dp1.

If you can't do 3p then you will not want to do CMP Sporter Rimfire as it is 3p too.

We can do Sils like another web forum does them with re-sized paper sils at the 25 and 50, so anyone with access to a range can shoot with us. We would just need to create are own targets as I would not steal theirs. Up for that?

I'd rather stick with rifle but will be happy to send in pistol scores if someone else owns it, I shoot both IPSC and IPDA on the odd occasion.

What about the rest of you? I am entering my scores monthly at another forum, but would love to start here.

I'm game...I can deal with offhand (don't like it but can deal with it...) , If you let me know what targets to print up for 25yd and 50yd I'll be there, and I don't have a clue about CMP Sporter Rimfire...soooooo....If you would go through and post some descriptions and rules, I think we may get some more participation. Some people will not speak up if they don't know what the topic is...unlike Path and myself...we don't give a chit...we'll ask!!:up::up:

Will do.

At a high level:
Offhand means standing with no support (no rest, no jacket, no sling, no anything) and doing your shooting.

3p. or Position shooting means shooting from 3 positions, these positions include standing, sitting (with your butt on the ground), and prone. A 4th position is kneeling, and in many 3p matches you can substitute the kneeling in place of sitting.

Silhouette shooting involves shooting offhand at the silhouette images of various animals. Typically these are metal plates sized and shaped like critters and placed at different distances and you knock it over for one point. A standard match would be like this:

Course of fire is 2.5 minutes for five targets, one shot per target, no sighters.
- Chickens@48 yds
- Pigs@65 yds
- Turkeys@ 84 yds
- Rams@ 109 yds

A Match consists of 40 shots, 10 at each target shape giving you a max of 40points.

Alaska Mike at RFC runs a monthly Sil shoot where he has resized the images so tht all shooting is done at 25 & 50 so that folks who only have access to a standard range can still compete. I get remarkably similar scores to the actual matches.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) sets the rules for many of these events. Monthly I try to shoot in a CMP High Power match (which is 3P with my AR-15) however I seldom have time to make it. (It's this Sat and Sat is our only day to do more Sockeye fishing). In CMP events there are several competition levels. In the top end the custom jackets, slings, and other equipment makes a huge difference.

A new bunch of CMP sanctioned shooting events gaining huge amounts of popularity are their rimfire shoots. All of the above but shot with rimfire.

The term "Sporter" is used by CMP to basically mean a plain old rifle and no specialized equipment. No $500+ rifles, no special boots an coats, no 50X scopes. The Rimfire Sporter matches are basically the CMP matches but done with a .22r like you can buy at Walmart for under $200.
Here is a link to all of the rules and regs for all of the CMP matches (http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions.htm)

Depending on what people would like to shoot here we can do any of the above.

That said, since it sounds like there are not many folks here who shoot regularly from position we could do something as simple as posting a target (there is one walmart sells which is perfect for this, I could look up the number) and saying 10 shots at 25 yards add your points up. No trying more than 5 targets per month. After a few months of this we could move on to Sils. Whatever you guys think.

I am very suprised we do not have any competitive position shooters here?

Not that it makes any difference, but I always thought it was curious they put it in the order of: Chickens, pigs, turkeys, and rams. Whoever set it up had little knowledge of farm animals...and why did they choose domestic animals to begin with? Anyhow, for whatever it's worth, the pig is far and away, the biggest animal there when full grown...(IF a pig ever gets "full grown")

Anyhow..enough of my pointless rant... :naughty: :duh:

I like this idea and would be glad to turn in some scores.

Another idea could be to do something like the Fun shoots that are done on one of the other boards

In the end lets do something
