A guy on another forum started this thread over there and got some good responses, so I'll try it here.
What is your dream rifle? It can be something available commercially or something designed in your own imaginings.
I don't own a single work-of-art collectible, really beautiful rifle or pistol; so I would love to own a handmade .45-70 double rifle with a buttstock and half stock made from Brazilian Permanbuco or Black Walnut burlwood. Of course it would have the fleur-de-lis checkering on the wood with a deeply color case-hardened receiver and hammers. It would have a fold down peepsight and a ten carat gold blade front. I think 24" barrels would be nice, too.
I can picture it in my hands now.

wow, that looks like one purdy rifle in my mind as well. while I respect the beautifully executed examples of weaponry, something of a tactical flavor beckons to me. its name? the PSG-1.

one thing I'd do is ditch the 6x Hendsoldt scope and upgrade to a Leupold Mark4 LR/T or Springfield Armory variable with BDC.

Thanks, Cheekser.
What is that choice of yours? Is it an FAL variant? Is it military issue somewhere? I like everything about it, design etc. except for the pistol grip. I shot a guy's .22 target rifle with one of those handgrips and didn't like it.
The practical side of me wants more AR-15s and maybe a fancied up AK-47 but in time, I'll probably get those. The .45-70 double is just a dream.

it's a Heckler & Koch rifle. basically it is a pimped-out G3/91 series rifle designed for sniper/anti-sniper applications. the MSRP is somewhere around $10,000.00. i suspect that only well-funded elite military/police units would be issued this weapon due to the prohibitive cost.

Cheekser- I would love to see where you quoted that price. Not saying it isnt possible but if your paying 10,000 for that your getting ripped off.
IMHO
My dream rifle?
Do I have to have just one?
Any of the Ruger Single Shots. The 45/70 topping the list.

Marine,The price I get is from the blue book and it shows at 100% $10,500. That is for the PSG1 Semi-Automatic Sniper Rifle.
In the tradition of the G3 automatic rifle, roller locked accuracy reaches its pinnacle in the PSG1 sniper rifle. Taking the legendary HK manufacturing processes to their fullest extent, the PSG1 is capable of sub-minute of angle accuracy.
Equipped with a permanent mount 6 power Hensoldt illuminated reticle scope, the heart of the PSG1 system is the 26 inch heavy polygonal bore hammer forged barrel. The PSG1 truly is a system, and comes complete with a hard shell case, tripod, and 5 and 20 round magazines.
The Legendary PSG1. Simply the most accurate, reliable semi-automatic sniper rifle in the world today.

A little Farqueson Falling Block action custom job chamberd for the .17Remington with a heavy Hex barrel and a 'tasteful' application of gold inlayed scrollwork engraving on the receiver. ;) The stock was of Rosewood with a Schutzen butt & a horn forearm cap =forearm was flatbottomed for work off a bench or bag and it had Unertl style scope blocks on the barrel... 15" apart. Even with the heavy Hex barrel, it probably didn't weigh more than 7lbs.
I was lining up the purchase price when some other customer waved plastic

Well.....
the first one to come to mind as I sit here looking at this would be something like the Quigley down under Sharps rifle....
But.... There are several fine rifles out there it would be fun to own or at least shoot a few times.

Good thread Rabbi, but wow, you can sure ask some tough questions. I guess it would be a 5.5lb. 17Rem. . The closest thing I've got is a Ruger Ultralight, rebarreled to a .17Rem and a Rem. mod. 7 in .17Rem. They both could stand some improvement. Walking these mountains with a 7.5lb. rifle and all the necessary stuff to call coyotes gets harder to do when you've started down the far side of 50. :( In .22Rimfire, the KDF I own, but I'm redoing a 581S Rem. which is close to being finished other than rebarreling it. 18oz. trigger, claro walnut stock, pillar bedded, and I even lapped the bolt lugs (not sure why ?). It still won't shoot as good as the KDF, but it's getting close.

Believe it or not, I already own all the rifles I want.
My latest aquisiton is a U.S. Model 1917 Enfield made by Remington in 1918. It is in true 95% condition. The blueing is strong and deep. The stock is undinged (except for one) and the cartouches are strong and proper. It is the nicest one I have seen and its MINE. It cost about $1100.00.
A U.S. Model Kraig Jorgensen in similar condition would be nice.
Irregardless of my first sentence in this post, I will continue to buy rifles.

I guess I stand corrected, though I have a feeling I could get an AR built the same exact way that would shoot just as well (if not better) and be as reliable.

Just purchased my latest dream rifle. Model 12bvss Savage in .223. See it at http://www.savagearms.com/12bvss.htm. First trip to the range and scored a 3/4 inch group with winchester 55 grain factory loads. Will be loading some match grade ammo for it soon. Should do better.
Just a question, not meaning to steal the thread, but I have noticed an interest in the 45-70 on this board. Might I ask why? This is out of ignorance, as I know little about this round except that it was once used by the military.

I read Rabbi's post, and for some odd reason, this popped into my mind. I can honestly say it wouldn't be the best thing designable, and I'm pretty much a bolt action freak, but for pure fun and handiness, if someone built a 30-06 around a Winchester Model 12 28 gauge action with a straight stock and beavertail forearm and vented rib on a sporter barrel, I'd be intersested in checking it out. A bit of engraving and maybe some tasteful gold highlights would make it kinda neat looking.
Just because.... :D
OK. So it's nuts. I also think the model 12 28 gauge is the prettiest shotgun ever designed and a rifle built along the same lines would be cool.

Take the Dragonuv rifle, make it all forged/milled. Make it 30.06. Have 20 round mags, and 50 round drums. Serious bipod, but still have the scope. Now do the impossible - make it lighter than it is with a lot of titanium.

I like shooters, never have cared for guns that set around and look pretty.
My favorite shooter of all time is a Ruger 10/22,DL Sporter stock,16 1/2" GM factory taper
barrel,Weaver 2 1/2X7 RF scope in Weaver rings.
Has had all the slick'n and tune'n you can do to a 10/22 and keep it legal.
Love to shoot it and shoot it I do, by the thousands. :)
Nothing fancy, but it's a fun gun to shoot, at
least for me.

I am still of the practical sense. A PSG-1 package would be ideal: bolt accuracy in a SA package. And my favorite round: 7.62x51. Changes? lighter where possible. Scope would also change but I need more research.
Or, a similar package in .338 Lapua would be ideal, but probably not feasible.

There are several that I'd dearly love to have, The Robar RC-50 is one, another is an original German MG-42, Then a mint Colt Potato Digger, after that, I would dearly love a reproduction Sharps in .45-120, with fancy Claro Walnut, and VERY light engraving, no gold or other fancy crap, and nice vernier tang sights. and globe front sights.
Sincerely,
