New squirrel rifle...

There I was, just the other day, at the local shop and happened to see a little Marlin lever gun that looked interesting. I handled it a bit, and liked its balance (I'm a bit of a sucker for carbine length long guns), as well as its overall fit and finish (this one is like new with hardly any evidence it’s ever been fired!).

A quick trip to the car for some trade bait, and the deal was done... even got two boxes of ammo thrown in as boot!

So... anyone else have a Marlin 1895G in .45/70? This one has the ported 18.5" barrel, and the only ammo they had on hand was Winchester's 300grain JHP loading. (Good squirrel load? :psycho: )

They didn't make them with ports for very long. It will be LOUD.

I have an older 1895 45/70 that I have done some hunting with and which often served as a "canoe gun" when in bear country. I like it quite well and expect the 1895G will prove to be a fine firearm.

Personally I prefer "rifle" length barrels as I think they hang better for off hand shooting and with open sights my aging eyes appreciate the extra distance between the sights.

9,

You got the one I'm looking for. I am eaten alive with jealousy and hope I can score one before the March pig hunt in TN.

Good on ya and I think you'll enjoy it.

nice pick-up, but for squirrels, I'd recommend some Buffalo Bore Hard Casts...

Mine's an older Marlin 1895 with the longer barrel.
I'm sure you'll enjoy the ol' 45-70, I do.

BTW... that 300 gr JHP is an excellent deer load.
I handload mine with a 300 gr. Hornady JHP and 55grs. of 3031 it's one of the most accurate loads in this rifle.

Good Luck

You got a good deal there in that rifle!

Ported - yep, you are gonna want some ear protection when you touch it off at the range. And when you find your first squirrel, it will also be your last for the day in that area :P

Ported = VERY loud!

Yeppir! I use Garrett HammerHead 540 grainers to make sure those squirrells are down. They can be dangerous!

Those prehistoric dinosaur squirrels can be tough critters. Make sure you bring enough gun.

Bwahahahahaha!

Thanks for the replies folks.

I knew the porting would make it louder to the operator, but thought it might also tame the short barreled beast a bit as well.

I bought the gun with feral hogs in mind, and I think the short barrel will be much more handy in the brush.

This one has serial number 000865xx, so it may be a few years old, though it looks like new.

I haven't decided what kind of sighting equipment to go with yet, though I know I don't care for the factory semi-buckhorn rear... Its either getting a low powered scope, or a XS ghost ring.

What do you all have on your 1895s?

What do you all have on your 1895s?I still have the factory open sights - gold bead type front post and what looks to be about 1/2 buckhorn. Wide shallow circular cut with a small v notch in the bottom, but the sides don't come up far enough to call it a semi-buckhorn.

Personally I like them better than the semi-buckhorn on my 1894 Cowboy; but to each his own. If I were to put glass on it I'd look toward a 1 to 1.5 scope to allow for faster acquisition and maximum light gathering, or maybe one of the red dot type attachments.

No 45-70, got .44-40(1889), .44Mag (94) and a .35Remington 336 :D
The ol' 44-40 with cast bullets is OK for squirrels, only shot 1 & it died :D Pigs??? I've packed the magnum and the .35 on pig hunts in chapparel brush = they pack very well
45-70??? shot next to someone with a brand new "Guide Gun" at my club... The muzzle blast was fierce, but it grouped at 50yds & you didn't need a scope to see the holes. :D
MARLINS!
