Rifle Goals for 2005?

A lot of the guns I buy, are spur of the moment, I just happened to see them, and know I can't live without them. This year I want to keep my eye out for a medium bore in .338 Win Mag, probably a Ruger M77, a compact .308 maybe the Rem. 7600, and a nice flintlock, Lyman Great Plains or Austin + Halleck .50.

What's on your list for the new year?

Since the AWB died (yippie!!!) I'm hoping for an AR 15 or an AR 10.

I'd also like to look over one of those new LH action Mini Mausers by Charles Daly.

well, I share the impulse-ishness you describe. that being said, the only rifle I am on the lookout to accquire before the next deer season is a compact, all-weather, and possibly scout rifle in .308 (definitely left-handed.)

oh, and of course I still desire a target-sighted .22 bolt-action....and did I mention that I'll be grabbing a CZ452, if the leftie versions are really here before '06, dagnabit.

Probably my only rifle for the year will be a Marlin lever action with 18" tube. It will be equipped with large scout scope and sling. I will only go with the .45-70 caliber because I cannot see adding more equipment to load .450 when I'm already well tooled up on the government round.

I'm hoping I can get it before my March hog hunt in TN.

Get the reciever sight on the 1895 Winchester, work up a load for it with the 350 gr LBT bullet now that I have the chronograph. The '95 Mauser is now in to be blued and a scope base fitted, new bolt handle, ect., and I need to pay for all that, plus get a scope for it. Pull the barrel of the RRB and clean up the action, decide what to do with it - almost certainly 45-70.

New rifles? I have my hands full with the ones I have!

I sold my Ruger No1 in .45-70 (22" barrel) and would like to replace it with a Browning or Winchester single shot also in .45-70 with tang sight and 28" barrel if I could find one. I read where the Browning black powder version has special rifling just for cast bullets. I'm not sure about that. I would want to shoot both cast and jacketed bullets. Any of you know which version would work best for both cast and jacketed?

Pay for one Mosin 91/30, buy another 1920 Izzy 91 waiting for me in the wings, get raises, buy AK clone for wifey poo, and FAL for me, or, if raises DON'T come through, try to snag a pair of SKS Yugos for us. Love the Mosins - need something she can shoot that's semi-auto.....
After that? A 10/22, a Chipmunk 22 for the kid, and maybe a Mauser k98.....

I want to do my AR-15 build (reciever should be here Friday!), and to get a new, accurate, center-fire boltie, in either .308 or .30-'06. Been using a Remington 1903-A3 from 1943, and the barrel is starting to annoy me. Plus, it's not my gun yet. :D :D

I have an M4gery on order. I want to build an AR10 like my AR15>LRDM, and what I REALLY want if I can convince all those that kind of have a say, is a full auto M16 lower. :D :D :D :D (I say it is my money and if I have it than I probably got shot at for it, the southern bell, says we can travel a lot of places on that kind of cash, we shall see though :D)

RabbiWhile I dearly love the 45/70, I traded in my Marlin 1895G in 45/70, but bought a Marlin Outfitter 444P. The 444 may lack some of the 45/70's punch, but shoots much more accurate than the 45/70 did, three .429" bullets shot at 50 yards in a hole that measured .493" edge to edge. I do still have a 45/70, but a single shot H+R Buffalo Classic.

I don't know if it was watching Vic Morrow in the television show Combat, but I've always drooled over the Thompson. I once had a choice of a AR-15A2, or a Thompson, I should have picked the Thompson.

ketchupshirt88,

Keep the faith, all things come to those who wait. My Dad's a Liberal, he hates guns and would rather see them all banned. At least for us law abiding citizens. He voted for Clinton twice, once for Gore, and once for Kerry, gungrabbers all. I got through that, you'll be okay.

Hopefully a BSA .22 W target sights. 6.5x55 New toy. Mosin Nagant.

Tom Gunn I think what they're talking about is the Enfield type rifling which is supposed to reduce leading from cast slugs, which will work fine for jacketed slugs as well. The lands and grooves are rounded instead of being cut sharp. Think about H&Rs buffalo special for that 45-70.

Armored Man I saw a NIB AK at the gun show this weekend for $200+. Commercial, semi only straight out of Izmash. Not ex military but built to sell commercially, while old beat up ex military AKs were selling for over $1000.

I've already "removed" about 8 from the fire this week alone! :o When I get all of them done, I think I might tackle a couiple scratch built bolt guns. one in .45 ACP, one in .223, and another in .308. Oh well..... that'll be a WHILE down the road.

Well...Today a CZ-550 Varmint Synthetic chambered in .308 arrived at the shop. It has a heavy barrel and an H S Precision stock. To make a long story short, it now has my name on it and should be paid for by February first. It will be a big brother to my CZ-527 Varmint Synthetic chambered in .223. Now all I have to do is get the one chambered in .22-250.

Thanks for the response, that helps. I'll check out the H&R. Noticed you are from SW OK. Been there. My son was at Altus AFB for four years. Made for a fun 2-day motorcycle ride (1000 miles one-way) to visit the grand-babies. Fond memories. Loved the 55 MPH speed limit between Lawton and Altus (yawn).

Well I'm sure you know that evil black rifles and the .223 caliber are not mutually exclusive? Sounds to me like Mr. and Ms. EBRs need to reside in that cabinet. The only thing you gotta watch is that they'll spawn a whole new generation of baby EBRs. Darn things reproduce just like rabbits!! :D :D :D

I guess I'd better revise my entry. Now that my March Pig Hunt in Tennessee is called off, I don't need the Marlin guide gun yet so I'm going to build an AR-15 to keep my Panther company. Our friend Rotty has built a couple and he only lives fifteen miles away in case I need to holler for help.

I'm going to buy a finished lower and then build the exact upper I want from parts. A sixteen inch bull barrel in .223 with 1:9 and chrome lined chamber and barrel, standard carry handle, front and rear sights and six position telescoping stock. This ought to be fun.

Sounds a lot like the Gibbs Enfield, but I would also rather have it in the Mosin M38. Never enough projects, that's what winter was made for. You could probably build a nice business out of rechambering the Mosin's for 45-70. There are a lot of them running around now, and most guys that buy one, usually go back for another. Especially at about $60 a pop. I have a Mosin M38 that I keep just for rainy day hunting, using Sako soft points. I never started loading for the 7.62 X 54R.
