Savage 10FP LE range report

And it wasn't pretty.
Got the rifle Wednesday, put on the bi-pod and mounted a Tasco 6-18x42 I robbed off of a 10/22 until I decide what scope goes on it permanently.

Went to the range Tuesday afternoon to do some barrel break in and scope sight in.
Got the scope sighted in on the second shot, discovered the reticle was canted to the right but forgot to bring the allen wrench to loosen the Leupold rings.

Took along a box of Remington Core Lokt 150gr. Haven't reloaded any 308 rounds yet, wanted to save my Noslers & powder for later. This is just a break in shoot anyway.

Groups sucked. I was so disappointed I didn't even measure them. Best three shot was just over an inch.

First the excuses:
1) The sun was in a baaad place, behind the target. Lots of glare in the scope.
2) The factory synthetic stock sucks. Twist the rifle ever so slightly and the barrel isn't free-floating any more; touches along the top of the stock depending on which way you tweek it.

Probably the main reason for bad groups was I was flinching like I've never flinched before. Geez, I don't flinch when I shoot my Turk Mauser!
Why the flinching? Tasco scope does't have enough eye relief, second shot bounced the scope off my eyebrow. Hate it when that happens.

Gotta love that Savage AccuTrigger though. I didn't make any adjustments to it, breaks real clean at 2lbs.

Now What?
I'll try it again with my handloads. My box stock Savage 110 in 25.06 can shoot 3/4" at 100 yd, surely the FP will do that or better.

Get a new scope. Jury's still out on that one but the budget is limited. Limited as in Leupold is too much. Yeah, yeah, you get what you pay for. You buy it for me and I'll use it.

Get a new stock. Read some real good reviews about the Bell & Carlson Duramaxx and it fits the budget.

Might consider a Nikon scope. I can't complain about mine.

Don't be too dismayed too soon. I bought a 10FP-LE2B in Sept, and I was a bit disappointed in it until I got about 80-100 rounds through it. After that, as long as I do my part, it will shoot comfortably sub-MOA groups consistantly with factory ammo. It will shoot MOA groups with Wal-Mart Winchester 150 grn pwr pts.

From what I've read, (http://savageshooters.proboards22.com/index.cgi)
a stock other than the original, would be of more help than the scope. I'd be interested in knowing how things work out.

Good luck, Jay

Next time out I'll use sandbags and reloads. I'll swap scopes too, don't need a third eyebrow!

when I first got my 10FLP, the groups were so-so, but like Jay said, things got better. i was on a break-in schedule of 5 rounds and clean, 5 rounds and clean, 10 rounds and clean, then 20 rounds and clean.

anyhoo, i shoot alot of milsurp ammo (local range is only 100yds. :( ) and she hovers around 1MOA. shoots much better when i feel like spending extra dough on name-brand fodder.

shoot some more, ditch the stock, and report back.

one more thing...........SHOW US SOME PICTURES :D

Rule 1: Always bring the allen wrench.

one temporary option to replacing the stock would be to move the bipod really close to the receiver, ala SVD-style. this will prevent it from pressuring the barrel, and you sahould see some accuracy improvement. but this only works if you are always shooting off that bi-pod for accuracy. if you do end up changing the stock, big deal, you've got a factory synthetic stock with a swivel stud near the receiver.
