Let's discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly between for lever guns. Winchester or Marlin?
To me the Marlin is built mor durable and is thicker and probably heavier. It has side eject.
The Winchester may have a smoother action and is thinner and lighter.
I usually prefer thicker but thinner is better in a saddle gun.
I also tend to prefer the straight lever handle rather than the curved Marlin job.

Grr that is no good
I have a 39A if I remember correctly, I want to get a red dot for it, I think she is drilled for scope mounts.
havent really used her for years, My Bro's used her till they got thier own. I bought my bolt gun and never used her again but if i mounted a red dot to her I would use her for sure. The bolt gun is short but is heavy, and I want to just for nostalgic purposes anyways.
Besides, I can snap shot with a lever gun just fine, took a running rabbit with her once. (bullet didnt expand and I had to track it all over heck till it stopped and I coule get a head shot into it)

Marlin!
I don't have much use for a company that has been trying to commit suicide since 1964. Winfester.

I have two Winchesters. One a 30-30 Theodore Roosevelt built in the late 60's. Still unfired, the action is smooth as glass. The other is a 45LC, about 2 years old. The action still feels as if is full of sand. Looked at a new Marlin a couple weeks ago, if it was to do over, the 45 would be Marlin, not Winchester.

 Got 3 = an old (microgroove barrel) 94 in .44Remington Magnum, a 336 in .35 Remington, and the Grandaddy of my gunvault - a still Functional Model of 1889 whose serial # sez it was made in mid 1890... coming up on 115years old and still shoots .44WCF's accurately. :D
I don't shoot it much any more because every time it comes out of it's case at the range, STRANGE guys dressed up in costumes keep pestering me and bragging on their Italian Wrenfesters! :psycho:
*Note to bro Webber if he reads this... Sorry Mike, nothing personal, but the local SAA posse are real buttheaded pests. !)

Adam,
XS Sight Systems (http://www.aosights.com/catscout.html) makes that mount and sight set that 7.62 posted. it is just that Winchester made a deal with them to package them together. I am looking to do the scout set-up on my lever gun, a Marlin 1894 in .44MAG.
oh, also have my aged Marlin Mod. 93 in .30-30. it has the straight grip.
never had the urge to buy a winchester yet....most likely 'cause i haven't seen any deals on 'em around here. I will say that, although I like the marlin better, mostly due to the solid-top receiver, Winchester seems to do a better job these days with wood choice and fit/finish of the stocks.

Still like the Winchesters. Don't like curved levers or moving triggers, and lever carbines weren't meant for scopes so the solid top on Marlin doesn't buy you anything.

Have owned western style Marlins (336 and 39M) over the years and one Winchester model 94. I preferred the looks and feel of the Winchester but the Marlin was more rugged and, at the time (early 60's) Winchester did not produce a .22 in the classic lever style. I did buy a Winchester piece of junk lever .22 (model 250 I believe) and at one time owned two Winchester Model 88s (.243 and .308). I was looking for a .22 this past Christmas so I could shoot the same caliber as my Grandbuddy (I got him a Crickett). I tried a Marlin 39A rifle but it didn't feel right. Then I tried a Winchester 9422 and it was love at first handling. I have added a Williams FP Receiver Sight and Fiber Optic Front Sight. Nice!

I have two Marlins, an 1881 in .45-70 and their .357 Magnum carbine. Can't recall the model, straight lever, shoots well and I've got a box of hand loads using light weight 9 m/m JHPs that are screamers. Nothing you'd want to fire in your K frame Smith.
Oops, I forgot the M-57 in .22 WMR. Now that was a fast lever gun, the lever throw was only a couple of inches. Mostly flick your fingers and close your hand.
I'd like a '92 and '95 Winchester to add to the gun vault.

I'll vote for the Winchester in 30-30. Any other caliber goes to the Marlin. If you wanna reach out and touch someone at a distance with a lever, get a Savage or a Browning.

I am specifically looking at a mate for my .44 Mag Redhawk.
I have a Win Mod 92 and a Mod 94 both made prior to 1920. Beautiful guns but I don't hunt with them; just keepsakes. I hunt with a Marlin M1895 Guide Gun in 45-70. It will shoot 3 shots each touching the other at 100 yards and on demand. I couldn't believe the accuracy.

I was at my favorite gun shop today (one of the few left in the Los Angeles area) There on the rack was a Marlin 1894CB, in .357 Magnum, saying, "Bill," "look at me." "Look at my exquisit lines."
It was as pretty as ICE, and sooo, I bought it.
I now have several Marlin center fire lever action guns. I have an 1894 Octagon in 44 Magnum, 1894 CB 357 Magnum, 1894CB in 45 Colt, an engraved, gold inlayed 1894 Century Limited in 44-40 WCF, an 1894M in .22 Magnum.
I have several model 39's in 22 LR.
I wanted the 1894CB in 357 Magnum, because I have a stainless Ruger Red Hawk, first year of issue, in .357 Magnum. The Marlin 1894Cb in 357 Magnum has a 24 inch bbl, which should squeeze out a few extra fps in velocity.
An interesting bit of trivia. When Marlin introduced the 1881 lever action, center file rifle, Winchester (Chinrester) sued Marlin, for patent infringement, because of Marlin using the top ejection as Winchester had been using, since they manufactured the Henry Rifle.
Marlin, because of losing the patent infringement law suit, changed to a solid top, side ejection, and wound up with a better rifle. The Solid top, side ejection is a significantly stronger action.

I have a Marlin 39, and a model 336 in 30-30. The model 39 is the most accurate .22 I have. The 336 is great for hunting hogs. I have a Winchester 1892 in 44.40, that I wouldn't trade for most anything. Its over 90 years old, still looks great and still fun to shoot. Of all the Winchester lever actions I've tried, I think the 1892 was the model they got right; the others are just also rans (except maybe the model 88 - now if I could get one for a decent price).

Did you say "..mate for my Redhawk.."?
In the same position, this is what I bought:

My gun dealer said he wouldn't sell me one. Says they have plastic parts that won't hold up. The plastic parts give it that buttery smooth action, or so he says.

dI had an 1894 in 44 mag until I gave it to my son. sdI took several whitetails with it. He has also. The only winchester I am a fan of is the pre64 m70 chambered in 243 that was left to me by my dad. I dont hunt with it any7more but do go out and shoot it once in awile for old times sake. single shot
