Now I been lookin fer a rifle/carbine so I been hauntin sum places. I run across a Varmiter, yesterday, what got tha gun, sling, bi-pod and tha biggest dang 0 to infinity, off brand, variable power scope I think I have ever seen. It could seen farther than that little thing could shoot if'n ya shot and moved up an shot agin.
It was used, never fired--$1900 which would seem reasonable cept fer that scope. Well I guess I coulda used it fer star gazin,
Blessings

Rifle Manufacturer/Model/Caliber?
Scope Manufacturer?
Bipod Manufacturer/Model?

$1900. seems a tad high for a used rifle, unless it is an exotic of some sort.

I did that once, out at classic arms, looked the rifle over ,caressed it. Never did i even think of any of the particulars till i got home . stunned by the price, and beauty of that beast.

the price on the one I looked at was 2900.00,and it was used. I caleed back out there later and found out it was in .338 Lapua magnum, might have been s sig Rifle.that was past 2 yrs . Any way.

Well, now the Varmiter is a bushmaster, the bi-pod and sling were bushmater also. The scope, and I am tryng to remember the name but can't, was one I had not seen before but it must have been a 50X, I would have to check with some observatory. It seemed to be more scope than this weapon would ever need.
Appears the former owner of this thing got a tad excited when putting it together without thinking.
The scope was the only thing I really questioned about the rig--just seemed out of its enviroment on this weapon. Anybody can put on a scope but, not anybody can do it well. I would have preferred that it was a varmiter and let me choose the scope with advice from a person whose reputation I trusted. That said, I know nothing about the scope.

If it was a bushmaster varmiter than right there you are looking at $1265.00 just in the rifle http://www.bushmaster.com/shopping/weapons/lr-24v.asp

A decent scope would run you up around the 1900 price tag if not more.

Yes- that was my thinking. I just am thinking the scope is a little toooo much scope for a weapon whose rang is 400 yds. or less.
Plus the weight.

I've got a 6.5-20X50mm on my AR. Depends on the size of the varmints you intend to shoot. In my case it's sage rats. About 2/3 the size of a gray squirrel. You get them out there a couple/three hundred yards and you can't have too much magnification.

i have the same on my AR

It seems that most would agree, then, that a 50X scope is a bit of overkill.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Hey William,

I'm a bit confused. Is it a 50X scope, or a 50mm diameter objective (the front lens of the scope.) A true 50X scope would be pretty darn rare - in fact someone would have to have a special conversion done on an existing scope to get it up to that magnification.

In my example: 6.5-20X 50mm the 6.5 - 20 is the variable power magnification - from 6.5X to 20X. The 50mm is the size of the objective, and has nothing to do with the magnification. 50mm objectives are fairly common on higher-end scopes, and they allow one to use the scope in dimmer (as in twilight) lighting conditions. The bigger that front piece of glass, the more light it can gather, the brighter the image. 50mm is about 2" in diameter, and yes, it does make for a bulky scope, but one that should perform very well.

If the scope on the AR is truly a 50X or 50 magnification power scope, yes that would be too much. You would likely have a lot of trouble with mirage (wavering heat images) and the field of view at 50X (how wide a swath you can view with the scope) would be so narrow as to make the scope practically worthless.

Well if I read the Scope correctly it is/was a 50 power scope. It is pretty darn large,

A 50 power scope!!? I've never seen one of them. That's more power than a lot of spotting scopes. I'm not saying you don't have one, I'm saying I've never seen one.

I think the largest I have ever heard of on a rifle was the 36 power ones they use on BR guns and a few that where around that or a little higher for 1000 yrd BR shooting.

I took one(1) look at this out of curiousity. I did not put anything on paper so therefore I cannot be held accountable for any falsehood. Those were the numbers I remember.
I will go back, when it drys out, and see if they still have it and copy it all down.

ATN makes some huge scopes. Great big ugly things. There is usually a hand full of them on ebay. My friend bought one at gun show 6-18x65 (thats the small one) for five bills. I couldn't stop laughing when I saw it!! Just sold it on ebay tonight for 291$. 10 pounds of russia's finest. No A/O and that big of obj. would probably fry my eyes. LOL... I think the make a 12-36x80 also, I don't know of a 50x though. Check them out if your in the market, it could be used for self-defence. ;-)

Many many many moons ago (early 70s) my brother and I mounted a 30 power scope on a Remmington 40 XB in 6mm. You really didn't shoot it at 100 yards. Your heartbeat disturbed the sight picture enought to be very distracting at that range. I learned to breath slow then stop and time the trigger pull with my heartbeat. A real pain but groups were in the 1/2" and under at 100 yards with carefully built handloads, barely an inch at 200. Really came into it's own for 300 yard plus at ground hogs. That 40XB had the best trigger pull I've ever met and it loved the then new 85 grain BTHP bullets.
