I think there is a lot more to this story, probably something like the car was driving to close to a convoy or it ran a road block or something. hey were shot on the way to Baghdad airport, the "Most dangerouse road in the world" according to new people, so I am sure tension runs high when you are driving down it.

U.S. Forces Kill Italian Agent After Reporter Freed

ROME (Reuters) - U.S. forces fired at a car carrying Italian reporter Giuliana Sgrena shortly after her liberation, killing an Italian secret service agent and lightly wounding the journalist, her newspaper said on Friday.

Gabriele Polo, the editor of Il Manifesto newspaper, said Sgrena's car was fired on as it made its way to Baghdad airport.

"This news which should have be a moment of celebration, has been ruined by this fire fight," Polo told Sky Italia television.

"An Italian agent has been killed by an American bullet. A tragic demonstration which we never wanted that everything that's happening in Iraq (news - web sites) is completely senseless and mad," he added, struggling to fight back his tears.

The Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi sent his condolences to the family of the dead agent, who was named by Il Manifesto's Polo as Nicola Calipari.

Sgrena was seized in the Iraqi capital on Feb. 4 as she conducted interviews on the street near Baghdad University.

She came roaring up on the checkpoint and wouldn't slow down.

Ignert Italian drivers anyhow..... When in Rome, etc., do whatever, but when in Baghdad and you are told by the military to stop at the checkpoint, you don't see if you can make the light before it changes.

I guess a little coordination from the Italiens would have been in order there???? Sorry...come up fast on a check point would give me a major pucker factor....but I can see there exhurberance in executing the rescue too...Guess there was no real wrong answer here...just failure to communicate.....

The lads at the check point were using hand signals, waving their arms, shining lights in an attempt to get the vehicle's driver to stop. He didn't and they opened fire. What with sucide bombers and all in Iraq, you'd think the Italians would have thought about stopping when signaled to do so.

As to the shooting, "tought toenails, people."

That Il Manifesto is a very leftist news organization. While that isn't a reason for them to be shot, at the same time it might indicate their attitudes towards US troops; it would surprise me if they were always behaving appropriately at roadblocks.
