I've got a shorty sks that I put a Choate stock on. I'm just not happy with it. I like the 7.62x39 round but want another rifle to shoot it in. Other than AK's what's a nice reasonably price rifle to shoot 7.62x39 ammo in?

CZ 527 carbine, if you can find one.

hmm...since you ruled out the "Best 2" families of weapons firing the x39mm, pickins will be slim.
i agree that the 527 is a dandy of a little carbine. the CZ quality is tough to beat.
the only other mil-surp arm that comes to mind in that cal. would be a Czech VZ52/57 rifle. dunno about current market prices though.
just for curiosity, why the no-AK mindset?

Mini 30, and ditto on the CZ carbines, for a good handy bolt action shorty.
Have you hefted a Yugo SKS? Different feel than your normal SKS, for sure.

I've owned 2 AK's and as sprayers there fine but they're just not what I'm looking for.
Since finding out that I have Chronic Heart Failure back at Christmas and feeling the effects of old age plus obesity. I've started leaning toward "lightweight" gas operated weapons.
Is there a AR-15 CArbine in 7.62x39?
The Ruger Mini-30 is a heavy rifle. I traded mine on the M-1 Carbine I have now.

Porbably the most accurate this side of a custom is the CZ 527 Carbine, had a Mini-Thirty and like the carbine a whole lot more, I mean a whole lot more!!!

A nearby shop quoted me $459 over the phone on a CZ 527. They are a nice looking little carbine.

I'm not that familiar with the CZ 527. Would the recoil be the same as in a SKS shorty?
I'll check the locale and big city shops and see what they go for around here.
How about a lever-action 30-30.
I know it ain't no 7.62x39.......It's better.

I would have suggested the AR (Model1Sales sells a complete "kit"), but in my 'net travels, any magazine with a greater-than-10 capacity is tough to find.

Took both the SKS and the M-1 Carbine out today. May just keep the SKS it performed better today. and it's already paid for. $529 was the quote on a CZ 527. Ouch.

When you factor in the price the SKS is tough to beat.
