AR hand grip too small ? mod (pics) |
I tried several hand grips on my AR-15, and all were too thin for my hand. I took a piece of scrap leather from a shoe repair shop (about 3/16" thick) and traced the profile, cut and trimmed it, soaked it in water for an hour, then used electrical tape to hold it in position on the hand grip (smooth side of the leather toward the grip) for 24 hours. When I removed the tape, the leather was hard and perfectly formed. I used automotive trim adhesive to affix the leather to the grip, because if I want to remove it, the adhesive will just "peel off". Then, a couple of applications of black leather dye, and here' what I got.

I don't know if we can allow leather on a mattel toy :lool:
Looks great!
The reasoning behind the "Mattel" reference is exactly why I never could bring myself to buy one for over 35 years. I s'pose I finally mellowed enough to buy one... I still don't care for their looks...... but this sucker will shoot.
You won't find "add-ons" like this on my "real rifles"...:psycho:

Very clever! I bet you could sell a few of those for a pretty penny.
The only issue in trying to produce them for sale is the variety of grips out there. If any of you are interested, and want to send me your grip, and info on how you want it built up, and I'll make you one. I'd do it for actual shipping cost to begin with. There's enough "personal preference" involved, that it will be a challenge to get it right the first time.
I'm working on another idea that would allow a person to custom mold a grip in just a few hours at home. I'll post results if it appears to work out.

If it's for defensive work, remember, firing right handed around the left side of cover exposes your entire torso. Fighting longarms have to be ambidextrous.

No argument, but target rifles do not have to be ambidextrous. This mod won't prevent left-handed use, it just enhances right handed comfort.
