A pretty neat piece that someone put a lot of time into. I agree with the message, but unfortunately, a lot of the WWII vets that were actually under his command would have a huge problem using Patton as it's mouthpiece. I know my Dad had an utter loathing for him and his tactics with the troops.

Still, the way he has been portrayed since the war would make him the logical person for this clip.

Ron,

I thought I was the only one who had heard negatives about "Blood and Guts". I met two WWII vets in a nursing home where I volunteered in Detroit and both absolutely detested Patton. They had both served under his command, so it wasn't second hand info.

In the same nursing home, I met an American who served in the Italian Army and he thought Patton would have done better under Mussolini (and been more at home) than serving with Omar Bradley and Ike.

I loved George C. Scott and the role he played in the movie, but I don't suppose for a minute that he was the real Patton. And the jerk named his dog "Willy".

Rabbi....

If you look at the "official" history of Mr. Pearl Handles, It is normally noted that he was greeted with "Thunderous" applause whenever he would show up in front of the troops. In fact, when one of the "slapping incidents" occured he was ordered to apologize to the troops and so he ordered a stand down, putting the Sicily mission in jeopardy. He ordered men to build him a stage that he could stand on during his ordered "apology".

I don't believe I have ever seen a photo of him without his prized helmet, and in fact he seldom took it off for anyone.

Anyhow, after all the troops had been gathered together for his required "apology", he mounted the stage and began his self serving speech, and almost instantly, thousands and thousands of the troops started loudly booing him. Dad said the more he talked the more the troops boo'ed, and he got so mad he jerked his helmet off and slammed it down on the stage, and then kicked it out into the troops and stormed off the stage.

He also said his personal opinion was that Rommel was ten times the tactician that Patton could ever hope to be.

For a shorttime, Dad was one of Bradleys bodyguards. If I recall, it was when Bradley had to go meet Churchill? (I could be wrong on that. I'll check with my son. He has Dad's trip through Europe memorized down to the smallest detail), and he held the highest praise for Bradley.
