Police: Man Arrested For Spitting On Jane Fonda
Fonda Declines To Press Charges

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
Police said they arrested a man for spitting on Academy Award-winning actress Jane Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.

Fonda, 67, spoke at Unity Temple on The Plaza about her new book, "My Life So Far," and her new movie with Jennifer Lopez called "Monster-In-Law."

At about 9 p.m., police said a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.

The man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.

Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.

Fonda declined to prosecute the man. The actress, who flew to Minneapolis Wednesday for another appearance on the book tour she began April 5, issued a statement through Jynne Martin of Random House, which published her book.

"In spite of the incident, my experience in Kansas City was wonderful and I thank all the warm and supportive people, including so many veterans, who came to welcome me last night," Fonda said.

In 1972, Fonda was photographed sitting in a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft tank. About her involvement in the Vietnam War, Fonda has apologized for her anti-aircraft tank photo. She has called it an incredible lapse in judgment.

Little more on the article here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7575576/

In an interview with the Kansas City Star, Smith said Fonda was a “traitor” who had been spitting in the faces of war veterans for years.

“There are a lot of veterans who would love to do what I did,” the Star quoted Smith as saying.

And the spitter, running from the scene, was caught by police. He ran, the coward. Wasn't man enough to stand there and accept the consequences of his actions. What sorta REMF was he in 'Nam? Spitting in the face of a woman, then running to save his A. Oh yeah, real deserving of a medal.

Jane Fonda has explained, regretted her actions that day at the anti-craft gun. She, like millions of other Americans felt the war was wrong. She did what she could to end it. Perhaps in her youth and anti-war passion, she went overboard.

My war in Vietnam ended over thirty years ago. No looking back, no regrets, no hard feelings. It was a wrong war, a waste of effort and blood, but life goes on... for most of us anyway. Someone wants to give the guy a medal, he can have one of mine.

Fonda apparently feels like she was a traitor of sorts and has apologized after a fashion.

The fool who spit on her is dispicable and to run away after such an uncouth act befits the man and his action. What an embarassment to men in general and to the Vietnam vet in particular. I would have kicked his ass on the spot even though it would have meant a night in the pokey. GG

You guys might have a valid point about him pulling a chicken move. On the other hand, if you care to check back in time, you will find that the ONLY time(s) she ever "regrets" her action is when she is hawking a new book, a physical fittness VCR tape, or a new movie. Other than that, she has absolutely no remorse whatsoever, and in fact, she still is as much as an activist as ever. Say what you will about him, but Jane Fonda caused a whole lot of trouble for our troops, and betweeen her activism along with her hand in hand partner in crime (who she financed) John F'ing Kerry, caused the war to last longer and got more of our men killed because of her actions. Forgive her if you must. I, for one, NEVER will.. .

Any Regrets she has are strictly financially motivated. She aided and abetted the enemy and nothing that can be said will change that fact.

Fonda has blood on her hands, she is a traitor and I would of done the same, minus the running part.

He should be charged with 'Spit and Run', which is a lesser offence than traitor. :D The guy said Hanoi Jane spit on Vietnam Vets, so she deserved it. I agree. By the way, Michael Dean Smith was a Marine in Vietnam in 1970, and this REMF might have crossed paths with him if he was in Da Nang.

...only problem I have with it is his running after the fact. And I agree with Ron 100% - she always trots out the "lapse of judgement" **** when she's on a video/movie/book promo tour. Note she's never really apologized - just very qualified statements like, "I regret my actions may have been construed by some as..."

Hanoi Jane is lower than a snake's belly. Anyone who brings her shame or embarrassment is okay in my book.

He did OK by me. Maybe the running is questionable, but the act was right on.

It doesn't bother me that he ran. I wish he had got away with it. Better yet, too bad he didn't have a bucket of cow $hit to hit her with. Saying she opposed the war is like saying Tokyo Rose opposed WW2. She got off light.

I agree, the only part he did wrong was to run. The b**ch deserves some juice in her face.
