Problem is, I saw at least two of them running away through the smoke. Whatever it was wasn't big enough.

I took a look at it frame by frame, and it apparently hit about fifteen feet or a skosh more behind it.

As long as a few of them died or were mangled, that's good enough. The team was unable to continue and hopefully a lot of them burned to death.
The ones that got away will take six years to grow new skin and will be wrinkled. COOL.
