Several years back I bought this Cimmeron<spArms Uberti Thunderer convertible. It shoots both 45ACP and 45Colt with a cylinder change out. If I recall correctly the 45ACP has been around since 1909 or something like that. My question is would or did they actually make convertible(for any caliber) handguns back in the day?http://photos.imageevent.com/10mmgary/guns/websize/DSC01057.JPG

:dunno:...but I would imagine not. At least as a rule. Maybe as a rarity.

The only conversions I'm familiar with dating from the Frontier Period were the cartridge conversions for Civil War era percussion revolvers. Some of these involved a simple swapping of cylinders while others involved a complete refitting of the gun with the addition of ejector rod assemblies and loading gates. There were also cartridge conversions available for certain rifles and muskets such as the .577 Snider conversion for the Civil War Enfield Rifled muskets and carbines. And the conversion of Civil war Springfield rifled muskets and carbines to the Trapdoor cartridge arms. Most of the rifled musket and carbine conversions were done under military contract. Sharps was also converting their rifles and carbines over to cartridge use and switching production over to cartridge guns.

:D Ya don't need moon clips with a .45 auto rimmed cartridge.
I know...They weren't around during Dillon's time. But they work good in any revolver chambered for the .45 ACP.

You can find them at e-gunparts.com (http://e-gunparts.com) , but I think you will have to have it fit by a gunsmith. I know Ruger will not provide or fit them.

I just can't see Marshal Dillon with moon clips :lool::D It would have helped in faster reloads for him. Actually this gun doesn't use moon clips. I guess some single actions might but I can't understand why they would.

Kenneth in NCRuger will sell you a 45colt vaquero with a ACP convertible cylinder. And I am sure they will fit an ACP cylinder to a 45colt vaquero. My next purchase is going to be a Ruger stainless bisley 45colt / 45ACP convertible. The cylinders have nice roll markings.

The .45 ACP was developed for and with the M1911 so that conversion is out. The .44Rus can be fired in any .44Sp if you count that as a conversion. The .22 Rf, 9mm-.357, and the one you have were the earliest that two cylinders were provided for.

How would you use a half moon clip with a single action (peace maker type ) revolver? where your only access is through a loading gate.
