Hawken Trigger help needed |

I need rundown on adjusting the trigger on a .50 CVA Hawken. I bought it 2nd hand. The trigger was honked up. To start, the set trigger would set, but the trigger would not release the hammer, just release the set trigger. There are two screws on the bottom of the trigger assembly. They seem to adjust travel on each trigger. There is a screw in the caplock assembly, on top of the hammer that runs through to the full cock notch. It runs through a spring. Best I can tell, that controls the trigger pull? After playing with the adjusment screws on the trigger, and the one on the hammer mechanism, I finally got it to work about right. I can't help but think that there is a procedure to set these trigger mechanisms rather than just trial & error. It took me the best part of 2 hrs. to get it to an acceptable level, as far as trigger pull and security of the cock is concerned. I have 3 of these rifles, and a broader knowledge of the trigger works would be handy to have. I think I have it working about right, but would truly appreciate a knowledgeable step by step on doing it right. I'm sure that there are others here that would benefit from this information as well. Thanks in advance, Dan

I just now saw this post sorry for the late reply. Without seeing the trigger setup I wouldn't be able to give you a good step by step instruction for adjustment and tuning. These Rifles do carry a lifetime warrenty and my suggestion would be in sending the rifle back to the factory for the trigger work. I'm not sure how old this particular rifle is but some of the early CVA rifles were very poorly made guns that were produced by a number of Spanish gunmakers who are no longer in business. The CVA Hawken is still in production and parts should be available. From what you describe it almost sounds to me as if the trigger mechanism is damaged rather than out of adjustment. If this is the case then the trigger should be replaced. Here is a link to the CVA website for warrenty information http://www.cva.com/index.htm

Mike-I am also beginning to suspect that there is some damage to the trigger mechanism, or the caplock mechanism. I see from the website that the lifetime warranty is to the original owner, and only then if the rifle is registered with them within 15 days of purchase. Any idea how they treat non-warranty work? I'll be contacting them to see if I would be better off with them doing the work, or just ordering the parts and doing it myself. I'll post how this turns out. Thanks for the response,Dan

I'm not sure how they deal with the non warrenty work. I suspect that they do repair their own products for a fee and it might be worth it to send the rifle to them. I've only owned two CVA guns and that was many years ago. One of them was one of those horrible Spanish made Kentucky rifles which I got rid of ASAP the other was a CVA mountain rifle which was better quality but still not what I wanted as I wanted a more authentic rifle. Those are my only dealings with CVA products. Another alternative would be to order a new lock and trigger from Dixie Gun Works, his could be a hit and miss proposition and I suspect that going this route would probably cost as much or more as sending the rifle back to CVA for repairs.
