CONGRESS MOVING . . . With a bipartisan vote of 22-12, members of the House Judiciary Committee passed The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms bill (http://www.preventlawsuitabuse.com/LearnMore.cfm) to the full House for a vote, expected to come after the Memorial Day recess ends June 6. "This measure provides protection only against suits based on the criminal or unlawful acts of third parties -- not against their own negligent or criminal conduct," said committee member Representative Cliff Stearns (R-FL). "Under this measure, manufacturers or sellers must operate entirely within federal and state law and are still liable for acts of negligence and for defective products." Representative Rick Boucher of Virginia, one of 46 Democrats co-sponsoring the bill, told The Washington Times (http://www.washtimes.com/national/20050525-112257-6560r.htm), "The effort of cities to sue gun manufacturers because someone misuses a firearm is nothing but an attempt to impose gun control by judicial means."
