I have a 55 gallon barrel that I keep full of water. I also have a few 1 gallon containers of water too. I refill the water in them every three months or so to keep it fresh. Anyway, a couple of days ago the water to our house stopped working. We had paid our bill so we knew it was something else. Instead of having to run to the store to buy overpriced water we just grabbed a couple of gallons from the back.
This went on for most of the day, we never had to get into the 55 gallon barrel but it was nice knowing it was there. Granted this doesn't qualify as a SHTF situation but it does reinforce that what I'm doing isn't paranoia but just smart thinking.

 I need to get some big drums and fill with water and supplies. We haven’t had a big earthquake in a while and are due.

When we had the Big Blackout, here, the whole family learned why I spent the time preparing for things that NEVER HAPPEN.

My family of three have enough canned food, MRE's and water stored for two weeks of comfortable survival. Plenty of batteries, candles, portable cooking stove and butane cans, tent, air matresses, solar powered radio, walkie-talkies, gas masks, camping tools, water purifier and lots of other useful stuff just in case we need to hit the road if L.A. can't be inhabited anymore. And about 1,500 rounds of ammo to defend what's ours.

Inci... out there you really need it, too. I'll bet not one of your neighbors is prepared! Well done! :D
I know mine, here, weren't - but I don't get funny looks from my family anymore. ;)

You're gonna be surprised Paul...my next door neighbor is a Mexican-American Republican (yes, such things really exist!) who owns three bussineses, a collection of firearms that puts mine to shame including just to name a few: a Kalifornia pre-ban AR15, Tokarev SVT40, a few SKS, M1 Garands, M1, a few lever action rifles, every Mosin model from every country ever made including an original PE sniper, K31, a few 1911's of different makes, Enfields, a couple of those giant caliber S&W revolvers and the list could go on for an entire page...
He's got two power generators (he promised one to me if the SHTF); he stores food and water and probabily 5,000-10,000 rounds of assorted ammo.
Two houses down the street there is another older guy who's got a similar hobby. As his wife put it: "Between all three of you guys, you can start a coup d'etat in Latin America"

The last hurricane - family all came up and stayed at the house. Didn't have to fight off any repti-gators, but we ate well and slept well.

Surprised? I'd be out and out shocked. After all, Grosse Pointe is known for everything that points to unprepared. No... next town over there's a bunch who know what to do... but, I think I'm the first prepared individual in all five of the Pointes! The Pointes are primarily doctors, bankers, big business VIP's and, yes, attorneys. Not the most prepared group in the country. :(
That's okay, though... if the SHTF here - I'd be able to hold em all off! ;)

as DTH mentioned having stored water came in handy for an unexpected no water day.
we don't need the extremes of Mother Nature, or SHTF. anything can happen. even the loss of electricity for a few hours is a pain, unless prepared.
last year when a water pipe froze and broke. we had water in jugs for drinking, and scooped buckets of water out of the pool to flush the toilets. it was a few days before the leak could be fixed, but we made it.

I do not believe that planning ahead equates to paranoia.

But it can also be seen as half full. Our electricity goes out regularly in storms, so I'd really be hurting if I wasn't somewhat prepared, with food water, coolers to pack frozen goods, etc. Mostly they don't last long but you never know. Look at the few who were prepared when tshtf in New Orleans. All we ever hear about are those who weren't prepared.

I got cought in Rita when they evaced Houston. Had to stay cause of dad being a cop and me being security for oil refinery. We had plenty as mom is into buying en masse whenver she hits the store. Funny thing is, mom bought about 20 of those 12 pack boxes of cokes. We looked at her kind of weird. Her explenation was, its MY essential item. :D

CordHi Malibuman,
Apparently, we're long overdue.
Seems like, during or after a crisis people "wakes up",then falls back to sleep.
Some will never learn.Caught up in their own little world.Everything's OK.
Don't worry,be happy....Those rains that caused several houses to slide down,
should have known better.Same thing, when people builds homes in river bottoms. Some don't have common sense.
It's these people that suffers. Wait until the next one:They HAD time to prepare. And didn't.
I could go on. Like the Sylmar Quake.I was there with C.A.P. Squadron 47, from Oceanside/Carlsbad area.So Cal.
I've seen sidewalks buckled, windows blown out.Nothing on TV could ever
show the destruction, like being there,in person.
Will see ya later.
