As the law stands now, there are only two ways to transport a rifle or shotgun in one's vehicle:

With a valid hunting license.
To and from a shooting range.

Legally one can not case up his .22 rifle, toss it in the trunk of the car and then drive out to Uncle Fred's farm to plink. Or to take it to a gunsmith or gun show.

However there has been a bill iintroduced in the State Senate (IIRC) that would strike down the two requirements listed above. And wonders of wonders our Canadian born, left leaning, in the pocket of Wayne County and Detroit, Governor said she'd sign the bill when it passes both the House and the Senate.

One can only hope.
