Gun report blamed on kayak paddle
http://www.wtnh.com/Global/story.asp?S=4759510&nav=3YeX
(New London-AP, Apr. 12, 2006 6:58 AM) _ Officials say a gun scare at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London apparently was a mistake.
Hospital officials say a man carrying a kayak paddle Monday, and not a double barreled shotgun, was the cause of the scare.
A nurse had spotted the paddle and thought it was a shotgun. She reported seeing an armed man and prompted a lockdown at the hospital.
New London police concluded an investigation after speaking with another employee who came forward to say he fit the description of the suspect. He was carrying a kayak paddle he had taken apart.
He re-enacted the situation yesterday for the nurse, who agreed she was mistaken.

Makes you wonder about that nurse's powers of observation in her job.
Yeah, but was it loaded?

Yeah, but was it loaded?
That all depends on what it had been drinking or smoking.

I don't know about Kayak paddles but, Canoe paddles can be quite deadly I used one to bag a snow goose up on the Okanogan river a few years back.

Boat oars of about any kind can be very effective weapons.

Okay... mistaking a boat oar seems a bit stupid, I'll grant you; however, a mistake in the other direction can be fatal.
My wife manages the OR's at one of the areas three Level 1 Trauma hospitals and in the past 6 years has lost 3 nurses. One was killed when "Homie" came to finish the job and the perp shot thru her to get to the patient. One was beaten with a pipe when she refused to open the Narc locker. One was stabbed and quit the profession. Hospitals in major cities face this crap on a daily basis.
I would rather my wife mistake an oar for a shotgun than to let an oar pass by unnoticed and have it turn out to be a shotgun. ;)

When you take the paddles apart and then hold the open ends together, they "could" be mistaken as two barrels (at a quick glance....and with no experience). For us knowing what we do, odds are that we would not make that mistake....but for the uninitiated.....:dunno:
He does have a point...Only because the nurses and staff are prohibited from having access to their own "Weapons of self protection".

Only because the nurses and staff are prohibited from having access to their own "Weapons of self protection".First of all , remember....I'm on your side...but....given this particular nurses powers of observation....the "paddle" guy might have ended up DOA...needlessly.... There are truely some people in this world that are not meant to carry....My girlfriend and my father are two...WAY to volitile personalities.....trust me on this one....They are both pro 2A...and have firearms of their own....but it's better that they leave them at home.
REDRUM! Where the heck you been bro?

Another situation that could be a lot worse is mistaking a shotgun for a paddle.

I know it can be a tough call, but more and more organizations are justifying stupid decisions and stupid policies on the basis of safety.
I have to admit I am increasingly skeptical about it all. I don't want to sound callus, but I am just worn out by all the "if it will save just one life" and "do it for the children" pitches.
Interesting how the phrase "lockdown", once almost exclusively a prison term, is so common now.
I wonder what the nurse would have thought if the guy had been carrying the deadly Okinawan fighting oar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eku).
There are truely some people in this world that are not meant to carry.Possibly. I doubt it though. I'd wager that IF our 2nd Amendment rights were not under constant errosion, which then had not resulted in the high threat level we've come to take for granted, that their "volatility" would be such an issue. But That's just my opinion since I don't know them. Now I DO know some "Recently converted use to be antis" that have WAY too little training and experience around firearms to be truely safe...but that IS a different issue.

Unless you can find a gun and ammo that can be autoclaved (for Trauma and OR Nurses and staff) then they are still screwed. ;)
I still wonder what idiot brings a canoe paddle to the hospital? :psycho:
