Drag Racing Question

I was watching NHRA yesterday, and I was wondering, is anything on John Force's funny car from a Mustang other than maybe the grill emblem? There was a Toyota out there too. Since when do the Japanese make big blocks?

At least the Pro Stocks resembled stock cars, not normally the car that the sponsor said they were, but a stock car none the less.

Thanks, I haven't watched any drag racing since Bob Glidden retired. He and my dad knew each other in high school. Even then, I didn't pay all that much attention. My family motto is: "If you ain't gettin' dirt in your beer, you ain't racin'"

Now this girl I've been going out with wants me to go to the US Nationals with her and her Dad, so of course, I figured I'd watch a bit so her Dad (and by extension her) won't think I'm an idiot. ;)

Why would you want dirt in your beer? Seriously, I worked them dirt tracks for awhile, got sick of it... Especially sprint car drivers

I worked the rescue, so you can understand my liking to off roading! ;)

I prefer racing where they wear clothes proper for their gender.

When I was a kid (9-12 or so) I was on a pit crew for a late model dirt car. OK, I was the head lug-nut holder and beer getter, but my name was painted on the C-pillar, and that was a big deal at the time. :D (Mom still has the picture of me pointing at my name with a big s***-eating grin on my face.)

I know a lot of sprint drivers, of course I live in Indiana, and you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a sprint/midget driver here. As a rule they just ain't right, but they do tend to be more sane than the bull riders I know.

Actually Chrysler is getting ready to reintroduce a new Hemi. It's going to be used in both cars and pickups. They plan on producing 440,000 engines.
They also sell, through Chrysler Performance, the original Hemi in iron and aluminuim. It can be had as a crate engine or in a build-it-yourself version. Displacements can be had from 426 CID to somewhere are 520 CID. This is in addition to all of the aftermarket Hemi engines; KB, Pink, JP1 etc. (An aftermarket Hemi is what most of the Fuel racers use).

Actually GMC didn't invent the supercharger either. They just popularized it for commercial applications (trucks). IIRC it was first invented by either Maybach or Daimler between the World Wars.
Don't recall turbos offhand though.

The supercharger definitely precedes the "Jimmy" series of huffers. There's an article on the McCulloch Supercharger ( became the Paxton) developed for Ford flatheads in the 1930s http://www.vs57.com/history.htm
The earliest reference to a supercharged engine that I've found is 1922 http://www.daimlerchrysler.com/index_e.htm?/history/epoche3/history1922_d_e.htm
The winner of the 1922 Targio Florio was "Count Masetti in a Mercedes 1914 Gran Prix model with a supercharger engine..." "It is the first time cars with supercharger engines are used in a race."

I believe that turbos came before blowers. Found this article on turbo history http://vintagecars.about.com/library/weekly/aa011500a.htm

Superchargers aka Blowers were used for many years on the Detroit Diesel line of diesel engines. These were two stroke engines which needed the blower to breath properly. Good engines that had a very distinctive sound to them. The old Detroit Diesels were a standard in the trucking industry for many years.
The blowers used on race cars is basicly the same one used by Detroit Diesel.
BTW: Detroit Diesel is a division of General Motors.
