Any good American heavy metal bands? |

In Finland, we have a ton of really really good heavy metal (power / melodic / etc.) bands -some of the best in the world, in fact, like Nightwish, Stratovarius, Sentenced, Lullacry, Entwined, Tarot, Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus, et cetera. In the rest of Europe there are many equally good bands too, like Moonspell, The Gathering, etc. etc. But I can't think of any American bands that play similar music. Now, I'm not sure if it's because they concentrate more on playing within the U.S., or because there isn't that much demand for new bands over here with all the good ones we've already got, or what... But just out of curiosity, if you know any good bands in the U.S. that play power, melodic, gothic, etc. metal, mind telling us about them?

In Chicago we have alot of local bands!
Check out this link http://fly.to/Curmudgeon ( Let me know if the songs work, I did the website but havent updated it in awhile). I grew up with these guys and am doing backup in drug free. Listen to Chicago style murder and punk party, I think you will like it.

Tony, dit you ever heard of Von Ramstein?

No I haven't. (Unless that's the same band as Rammstein, the German heavy metal/techno-combination band.) I tried entering the name as a search string to Evreka.com (Altavista search engine) but I get way too many hits. Most of them in German, which doesn't make things any easier... So, any more info on this band Brick?

Well, Quiet Riot is still touring--better than ever, and much better live than on an album...
Ratt is still around.
I hear that a bunch of the old bands that debuted in the mid-80's are back...
There's Prog-metal, like DreamTheatre
Then, there's younger bands...like The Offspring.
bunches of local bands in most cities.
Even old Dee Snider still does a few shows a year with his SMF band...mostly Twisted Sister tunes, but some Widowmaker and Desperado stuff, too.

Quiet Riot! Oh Bry you are so young! :D
I think they are looking for heavier stuff like Incubus? I guess Offspring is kinda there. Didn't you say your brother or someone you knew had a band? Was that you? Sorry you know, that old age ;)

Dreamtheater is from the U.S.? I never knew that... They're good, although a little too "proge" for me. (Offspring, on the other hand... Blah.)
Sandy, the songs download ok, now I just have to get my computer to understand which program to use to play them... (For some reason my 'puter keeps wanting to play them with Winamp, which keeps not wanting to play them. I've tried associaton *.wav's with the Windows media player but the damn thing keeps on happening. I have to try again when I have the time...)

Sandy...while you were in high school in '83, I was in third grade...by the time I discovered QR, they were gone.
Then, I spent 7 years trying to catch them on tour again...
;)
Anyways...Offspring is hysterical.
My brother's band...Hookerfish, theire page only has some live clips. haven't gotten those yahoos into the basement to record them for real.
http://www.hookerfish.com
The live clips are in MP3 format.
No vocals, as they are still looking for a good vocalist...and no rush either b/c the guitarist is in Boston for a while, doing the career thing in Electrical Engineering.
As to non-metal bands...I also like ICP, Lords of Acid, and one of my two pop band weaknesses: Paula Abdul. Never mind that I was in 8th grade when she got famous...my wife cracks jokes all the time as to WHAT I was paying attention to. ;)
Metal?
Lessee, Prong, Slayer, Lita Ford (think she's still retired), Aerosmith...I'm sure others will come to me later.

Check out Godsmack.
They are originally from Boston IIRC.
They are a great band.
I like their stuff quite a bit.
If you have napster you cant find them by searching for Godsmack but search for gsmack and you will get results.

Hey now, Aerosmith is pretty *******' far from heavy metal... (I don't really like the real fast stuff (speed, trash, death, white, etc. metal) either though.)
Hmm. I'm still not seeing what I had in mind. (Say, have you folks checked out Nightwish yet? There are mp3's available at Nightwishes homepage (http://www.nightwish.com) (www.nightwish.com) That kind of stuff I just haven't heard from the U.S.) Maybe stuff like Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius etc. just isn't "in" over there?

No offense Tony, but there's quite a variety of definitions as to what constitutes "heavy" and it keeps changing...
Metal tends to range from bands once known as "hard rock" to what was "heavy" in the early 80's (later considered "party metal" by some) to the bass-heavier early 90's...
Sorry, but music doesn't fit quite that cleanly into categories all the time.
Twisted Sister was considered "heavy" once upon a time...but compare it to Dee Snider's Widowmaker and it doesn't hold a candle (different decades, different standards).

Good and heavy metal put in the same sentence is something of an oxymoron, as far as I'm concerned, unless it's "GOOD, they burned all of the heavy metal CDs!"

That's fine, I consider the same true for Country-Western (*puke*).

Yeah, it's sad how he got to his end!
Dieing in a bus accident is no ending for a artist.
And i nerver get used to Jason, i still think that he don't fitt in the group.
Cliff e'm all

If memory serves, cliff's replacement left the band a couple months back.
I think Metallica is on Prozac though...the lead singer smiles while he sings now--and he's all GQ'd out. Looks normal.
*sigh* and I thought rock stars never grew up and became happy, productive individuals. ;)
