Elected Officials Who Support Illegal Immigration Lose Their Jobs
The town of Herndon, Virginia went to the polls on Tuesday and ousted the mayor and two town council members who supported a day-labor center for illegal alien workers. Voters replaced the incumbents with challengers who want to make considerable changes at the day-labor center. The Town Council voted 5-2 in support of establishing a center. Now there is a 6-1 majority in opposition. Voter turnout was up 6 percent from the last election. Some attributed the voters' discontent by describing a feeling that the residents were not being heard, and elected officials not being responsive to their constituents' concerns. Judith Markbein told the Washington Post that she voted against the incumbents because "when we put money into a day-labor site, we are putting money into people who are illegal. I'm not trying to be prejudiced, but when people are given rights that they haven't earned, it makes me angry." This election helps disprove the RNC's previous position that elections cannot be won or lost on the immigration issue.
