"... America responsible for rise in crime in Australia ..." |

Another post (I can't find it now) went into great detail about how crime has greatly increased in Australia after the government spent half a billion dollors collecting and destroying all guns in the hands of the public. The reason being that the criminals didn't bother to turn their's in and all sorts of violent crime (especially home invasions) were up from previously years. (can anyone find that original post?)
I shared that with someone in Australia and received the following reply ... Fud.....yes crime is increasing in Australia. But not in response to new gun laws. It has never been legal to shoot someone in Australia. If a prowler were to enter my property I would not have the right to shoot him. If I did so I would face criminal charges. I am only allowed to use reasonable force to defend myself. The increase in crime is explained by the increase in population....the multi-cultural society we now live in (which brings tensions among some ethnic groups)....and the increase in illegal drug use. We also have a large refugee population who bring an abundance of problems with them. Unfortunately we have yet to provide the infrastrucure to desperately needed by these people who are fleeing violence in their own country. People in Australia have NEVER relied on guns for self protection. One school of thought suggests that the increase in violence, especially in our youth can be attributed to the increasing violence in video games and movies....most of which are productions of U.S.A. Guns have been a part of your society for a long time......they have never been part of ours. And I pray they never will be! ... Where's Bruce when I need him?

If I remember history correctly, did not the Aussies have their own version of the "Old West"? And this dork says guns were never part of their culture. BULLoney. As for the video games, maybe he should blame Japan for his society's woes as well. His post did have a revealing point to me. I know now that liberals everywhere share one common trait: they always blame somebody else.

I took most of the comments made here and rolled it up into a reply and received the following response ... I don't know which history books you have been reading, but Australia has NEVER had any version of the 'Old West' And if you read my email a little more carefully you will see that I was referring to "One School Of Thought". Obviously with the increase in our population and the rising crime rate a great many studies are being done on the subject.
I know that the law is open (just) enough to allow some judges who use their heads instead of their law books to dictate their judgement. That is not to say that they all will. I do agree that the judges mood is highly relevant to any decisions handed down. But I would much rather have our legal system than any other in the world.
If you are unable to participate in a debate in a less belligerant manner I am definately happy that you are where you are and I am where I am. ... I don't think that he liked the comment about "liberals always blaming somebody else". This appears to be another losing battle -- judges mood highly relevant to any decisions handed down and they would rather have that than any other legal system in the world?

Alan, please pass along for me that Gunslinger is equally delighted we do not live on the same continent. Gunslinger has enough trouble with our own idiots without having more from there. Although I would hazard a guess that there are more than a few freedom loving Aussies that would gladly give his sorry, liberal ass to us if we would take him.
Increased Drug Use. HUMMmmmmmm? I wonder how many gun crimes have Drugs involved. I wonder how many gun crimes where drugs are not involved? Do you think DRUGS may have something to do with gun owners problems?

I wrote back to the guy using Gunslinger's words almost exactly and here's the reply that I received ... You know very little about Australian politics if you think I'm a liberal. But your lack of knowledge is already abundantly clear. On many subjects. As for my sorry arse......well there are enough people over here lining up for a bite of it. Doubt there'd be enough left to send to you yanks. But I'll try to save a little just so YOU can 'Bite My Ass'... Don't think that I'm going to bother to reply because we're no longer discussing gun rights but trading polite insults.
Another lost cause.
