Source For Stag Needed??? |

I really have no bloody idea where this topic should go. :D
Does anyone know of any sources for stag that has not already dried up since the embargo?
Specifically what I am needing right now is small scales to make a set of grips for Terri's Taurus PT-92. I was simply planning on ordering some scales from Jantz Knife Supply in OK and making my own. Jantz has sold small scales for years for people to use to make knife handles. But they are completely out. (I'm thinking that Guerilla, being the knife person he is, might know a source for scales from a knife making supplier.) But in addition to the small scales I know I'm going to want some larger pieces in the future for single action revolver grips. They are available from various sources in imitation. But one thing that drives me up the wall is a poorly fitted set of grips and the imitation stuff loses its texture and color when sanded on.
While we're on the subject....since the embargo on India Sanbar Stag was put into affect under the Clinton administration do you think it would work for me to write a letter to Bush and ask that he lift it so I can have grips again? If I do write him since we already have troops in the area would it be too much to ask at the same time that once we are done with Afganastan that we take over and occupy India? Think about it. They have ivory and stag. Surely, being a Texan and all, George would understand the wisdom of this....dontcha think? I mean he has to like fancy grips on his guns to.

Bill, I thought the Indian government put the imbargo on the stag antlers. I could be wrong on that, I have been in the past, but that is what I remember reading at EAGLE GRIP'S web site. http://www.eaglegrips.com
In one of the gunrags not long ago I read something about an American source for elk antlers for grips and the like. I can't remember where though.
Antoher source might be ATLANTA CUTLERY, sorry I don't have an address or url. Not really in Atlanta but close enough for government work.

Well, that about settles it then. That is enough evidence for me to declare war on India when we get the time.
I've used and fitted several sets of Eagle grips, including their real stag in the past and love their grips. I use more Ajax grips than Eagle. But Eagle is, in my opinion, hands down the better company in both customer service and quality.
Thank you much for the link. I'll check them out.

Bill, I went to the Eagle web site (damn, I almost bought a pair of Ultra Ivory "Patriot" stocks for a 1911, except there was an error in the ordering form) and they show elk stocks for some pistols. You'll have to check if they have them for Terri's pistola.
Boy, are those scrimshawed Patriot stocks nice. I saw them and grabbed my credit card. $122.50 of pretty. Saved by computer problems. :)

'Slinger....
you might try going to one of the knife related bulletin boards, and asking in one of the For Sale forums. www.bladeforums.com (http://www.bladeforums.com) woul dbe your best bet...but to use the for-sale/wanted to buy forums you have to pay them.
www.knifeforums.com (http://www.knifeforums.com) is probably your second best bet.
Its very possible that one of the custom knife makers there would have some stag they were willing to sell.
I know a lot of knife-makers are wanting stag pretty bad....but there is a chance someone who doesnt want it would sell it...altho at a probably inflated price.
There is one other forum, I'll find the address of it for ya tonight, its a forum for knife makers, they have a Materials Wanted to Buy forum....
I'll get ya the link, post it here, as soon as I can find it.
I am figuring here that searching it out amongst the people who use it would be your best bet.
SO knife makers naturally come to mind.
~*~UPDATE~*~ Try Texas Knife Supply, www.texasknife.com (http://www.texasknife.com) is their site. On there it says call or email them to see if they have stag available at the current time or not. (713) 461-8221 is the number and sales@texasknife.com is the email.
~*~ UPDATE 2~*~ http://pub42.ezboard.com/bcustomknifedirectoryforum
Here is that knife-makers forum I mentioned....
Ask these kind folks if they know wherre to locate some int he sizes you need....and/or ask if anyone has any for sale.

Thank y'all most kindly. I think that a nice set of grips can make an otherwise mundane gun look fancy and love working with them. This will give me some places to poke around in to check out material. I like stag. But Terri is nuts over it. I keep promising to build her a set of single actions as soon as money permits and regardless of what else I did with them she would not be happy until they were fitted with stag grips.

I have two sets of stag stocks for 1911's that I really like. Something about stag, like ivory, that looks just right on certain pistols and revolvers.
