The Look, Smell and Feel of a Sellout
"When can we see the agreement?"
by Angel Shamaya
July 14, 2001
KeepAndBearArms.com -- Gun manufacturers Ruger, Glock and Berretta are playing poker with the Devil. Sitting in the kitty is the very freedom of our nation. And one who looks closely at their card game cannot help but wonder whether or not the United Nations is dealing the cards.
According to the Associated Press, "Key arms makers in the United States and Europe are willing to accept a voluntary program to mark and trace small arms to help curb illegal trafficking." As reported by Foxnews, what was until recently a rumor has been "confirmed by industry officials." In the Foxnews report, the above-mentioned dealers are specifically quoted and have been quite candid in their letting the world know some of what is going on.
It's not yet apparent just how many American gun manufacturers are negotiating with the United Nations -- whose stated agenda is for global disarmament -- but it appears that there are more than just these three. It also seems that at least one of these three believes that the UN's presence at the table is not only agreeable, but desired. C. Edward Rowe, a senior executive at U.S. arms producer Sturm, Ruger and Co. -- representing the arms manufacturers -- said that if the agreement "were to take place under the auspices of the secretary-general, this would greatly enhance its effectiveness."
Since the UN's "Small Arms" conference started on July 9th, gun owners all across America have been quite animated. One organization is selling a T-shirt with a UN emblem covered by a hunting scope's crosshairs, captioned with only two words: "Got Ammo?" And according to the second recent report from UN officials, they've received hundreds of angry emails, some of which set off red flags and merited being forwarded to officials in New York City, and to "federal officials." A savvy activist who publishes on our site from time to time created quite a flashy presentation expressing nothing short of a "Don't Tread on Me" attitude toward the United Nations -- coming soon, to this website.
Meanwhile, Ruger says that with the help of the UN, "effectiveness" would be "greatly enhanced."
What, one wonders, are we seeking to enhance? American liberty? The Republic? Or profits as a result of having good relations with overseas buyers who'd possibly have gone elsewhere for their "small arms" -- perhaps to a manufacturer who will do what the megalomaniacal UN says? The "Secretary General" of the United Nations, Kafi Annan, was told about the 4-page agreement on July 5.
Can we see it? What does it say?
What other gun manufacturers are represented on the 4-page document Mr. Annan knew about before We The People did?
The stated goal of this agreement the gun manufacturers are negotiating with the UN is for "marking and tracing," as a way of "stemming the illicit trade in small arms," said Peter Batchelor, project director for a "Small Arms Survey" published Tuesday. "But it won't be possible to do this without enhanced police, law enforcement and customs efforts and information sharing by governments," he added.
So we need more police working to enforce the 20,000+ unconstitutional gun laws now?
Ruger's Mr. Rowe "chairs the manufacturers advisory group of the World Forum on the Future of Sports Shooting Activities, an international gun lobbying group." For Americans who understand the true meaning of the Second Amendment -- "one more safeguard against tyranny," as Senator Hubert H. Humphrey put it -- we can only hope that Mr. Rowe (and Sturm, Ruger Inc.) are loyal primarily to the Constitution and to freedom, rather than simply to the "shooting sports" and the corporate profits they produce. When he's talking about the tools Americans use to accomplish that safeguard but negotiating with those who wish to remove our Liberty Tools from our hands and our gun cabinets, one must ask: Is this "agreement" with a stated enemy of our Constitutional rights going to be good for the Republic? If so, how?
And when do we get to read every word to which American gun manufacturers are or will be agreeing?
If the stated goal of the agreement, as reported, is to mark and trace firearms, American gun manufacturers already do that. Serial numbers are recorded and records tracked from the manufacturer to the dealer to the buyer. It stands to reason that there must be some kind of additional requirement being discussed that goes beyond the already stringent requirements placed upon American manufacturers -- a tracking requirement such as full registration right down to you as the owner, in a database, perhaps.
And with discussion being floated in the mainstream media about "information sharing by governments," a question begs the asking: Are we talking about the United Nations having information about American gun owners? Anyone who understands the UN's commitment to put an end to private ownership of guns -- worldwide, and that does mean in America -- knows full well that the UN would love to have that information.
Far fetched? Hardly. UN troops engaged in gun confiscations during the Balkan crisis.
So...to dispense with these pressing questions...
When can we see the agreement?

RE: Your Looming Agreement with the United Nations
July 14, 2001
To Whom It May Concern,
With the cat poking its head out of the bag on your looming agreement with the enemies of private gun ownership -- the United Nations -- would it be too terribly much to ask for a copy of the agreement? We've a few thousand gunowners including a good many of your past, present and potential future customers who'd be most interested in viewing the document, primarily to know whether or not you'll be receiving our patronage -- or not.
Suffice it to say that we oppose any negotiations with the United Nations that could in any way lead to further infringements on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. One would think that would go without saying to the manufacturers we've long supported, but some of what has leaked out in the press does not bode well for our future relations with your firms.
Sincerely, I await your reply,
Angel Shamaya
