Sight Settings and POI on Mosin-Nagant?

Hi,

I've been playing around with sighting in my M44 at 50yds.

In order to have it hit POA = POI, I have to put the rear sight on the 300 meter setting.

According to the ballistics calculator located at http://www.handloads.com/calc/index.html I should be over 3" high at this setting when shooting at 50 yards. I'm dead on with 148gr Czech stuff and just a tad low with 185gr fodder.

Was this common on M44 carbines, to have the sights this far off of the marked elevation, or what do you suppose is going on?

My example is more accurate with the bayonet folded since it doesn't touch anything and therefore cannot affect accuracy as the barrel heats up. Maybe this has something to do with it?

Any guesses?

Thanks,

Josh <><

I'm going to have to get mine out and see how it shoots, I still have some surplus ammo for it. I have not shot mine enough to really know how it does shoot:( , but I do know it has very big sights,(which I like) even I can see them:D Nate

The M44's were designed and sighted with the bayonet extended. Mine is more accurate with it extended. TO be honest, it's been a few years since I have shot it....since our ourdoor range closed down. But we have another range that I haven't had the time to get to. They just put in a 300 yd range!!! Guess it's time to get out there....

I recall reading some where that the Russians used a different way
to measure distance in the past. They might be using the metric system now. ;) ;) ;)

You're right! If the bayo can touch the target, its in range....pull the trigger or lunge forward :D

To be honest, my m38 shot well to 100 yards at the 100 m setting for the short time it wore issue sights...

The unit was the arshin, wasn't it? Around 28", or a soldier's pace?

P.S. Mine looks to be graduated in meters as it's got the Soviet stamps. J.S.
