Dug this artifact out of my late father's toolbox - Way down in the bottom;)
21" long, weighs a bit more than 2lbs., appears to be either wrought iron or mild steel with hammermarks throughout. cleaned the mung off with G-96 and a bronze brush. The ball end has been hammerd flat and the arrowhead end was cleaner than the rest and while pointy, was in no way sharpened. = WTH is this thing??? = My guess is it was a very fancy Tent Stake - why I do not know, but it makes a heckuva swaggerstick when I go out in back in the dark:) ;) :P

I don't buy tent stake. In the days that was made, tent material was much heavier, and I don't think that diameter would have been considered heavy enough.

I'd sooneer vote for a planting stake. With the ball, it could have been easily pushed into the ground with your palm.

I'd personally prefer wood, however.....

How thick is it out towards the point?

Is that some kind of folded hammer weld joint/seam?

Could it be part of an andiron set? Possibly a poker?

If Hillary is elected, we may have to fall on it.

It is interesting; maybe just a bit short for a poker.

That's what I was going to say. Seems like I've seen one of that type before.

Well I'll add my 2 cents, just off the top of my head it looks like a
solider iron that was heated in a very hot coles before being uaed.

Just smidge less than 1/8" on the edges with a slight taper out to the tip... & No, there is no weld mark = just hammerforge marks like the rest of the unit. ;)
Whatever this was, it was done deliberately with blacksmith tools from carbon steel... don't spark like iron:)
