Why is it always easier to buy a gun on layaway than to save the money for it? Wadcutter had mentioned putting a rifle on layaway and it got me to thinking about it. Most of the guns I put on layaway cost more than I can afford at the time so I justify it by putting the gun on layaway with the idea that I can spread that cost over a longer period of time. Then again most of the guns I've put on layaway only last about two weeks there. I sit and think about the new gun constantly, driving myself nuts until I just find the money to pick them up. Sounds like an illness doesn't it? Well I guess I'll just have to run to my local gun shop for the cure.:psycho:

I think it's easy to put one on lay-away because that way it's kinda yours! And you know it's there for you when you make the final payoff! :D

I think finding treasures is half the fun. I put that CZ on lay a way because it wouldn't have lasted the weekend in the used gun rack. I didn't expect it to still be there when I went back. Being Friday night and payday, the used gun area was packed with vultures just like me looking for an easy pickup. Two guys were looking at the CZ and debating whether to buy it. Meanwhile, I'm trying to look unconcerned, examining some butt ugly Savage 110s, but listening to every word they said and sending them negative thought waves. It worked. The second they walked away I swooped in and grabbed that CZ quicker then a politican can break a campaign promise and held it for 15 minutes in my hands before a salesman was free. It had only been out for four hours and hadn't even been booked in yet.

It could be that it's just easier to hide $50 a week from the Wife than it is to lay the money out all at once and face the wrath of she who holds the pruse strings.

Us and guns are just like women and shoes. They just magically appear someday, and when asked about it, it's the same response for both sexes...
"That/Those?? I've had that gun/shoes for a long time, you just don't pay enough attention!"
I suffer from the same addiction. At one time, I had 4 guns on layaway. Might not be alot to some of you, but it was more than I really wanted. I ended up dropping one, and paying off the other three asap. Now that we're slow at work, and money isn't exactly blowing the windows out on the house, it is really kinda nice not to have anything on there.

Me too...my last few guns were bought on layaway...if I werent worried about my car taking a dump, there might be another...
Much easier to afford, and, like mentioned, if you're looking at used guns a lot, you need to make your move, cause if you dont, someone else likely will

Worst thing about layaway is that with the gas prices, the extra trip into town to make a payment burns enough gas to make the payment. I guess that's a perk about working out of town for long periods of time. By the time I get home I have the cash to be like a kid in a candy store with a shiny quarter. :)

Some of my gun purchases have been somewhat impulsive. ;) While not always a bad thing, I found I had some guns that I'm really not that fond of, or that I don't think are critical for me to own. I recently sold some to downsize to a more realistic number.
As a relatively new gun guy, I'm still figuring out my tastes and priorities.

I am a serial gun collector. Cannot afford all that I want so I buy what I like shoot it, play with it, use it, then trade or sell it to buy the next gun I "just have to own." So far only a very few have become permanent residents, the rest are just visiting.

Today I purchased another revolver for myself. Its a S&W M28. It came in the shop on consignment. It looked so good that no one checked its function. The trigger would not index the cylinder and the trigger would not reset. The poor revolver had been rendered to "single action only" status by a criminally bad trigger job. It appeared on my bench with a note, "can you fix this?" I did. Put M27 innards in it, did a proper trigger job and radiused the trigger.
It looks as if someone bought the revolver in 1965 and took it to have a trigger job done on it or attempted to do the job himself. The trigger job was botched so badly that the gun was put away and forgotten until the heirs found it and decided to sell it. I'll bet that it hasn't had more than 20 rounds put through it. Its 95+%.
Its mine now, but I didn't lay it away...:D

I've never put a gun on layaway. Of course, I don't buy as many guns as some. However, when I do run across one I want, I WANT IT RIGHT NOW.
And my wife, bless her soul, always keeps the finances in such a shape that, when that happens, I can do it.
But as I said, I don't buy near as many guns as most of you guys do.

I just stash the box in the garage and bring the rifle in wearing one of my old beat up gun cases. LOL

I tried that earlier this month. Was all set to sell or trade off my 20 gauge for a revolver...went looking for the revolver I wanted, didnt find it right away, but was still lookin. Then I pulled out the 20 gauge to make sure it was all cleaned up nice and went 'Why would I want to sell it?'....would like to get a new gun, but I bought all the ones I have because I wanted them and just cant bring myself to sellin them off...only sold 1 gun and that was because it was a rifle that shot some of the most beautiful shotgun groups ever:down:

That is EXACTLY the way I handled it for many years. But then, finally, I came to the place where every one of the few guns I have I will not part with.
And that's when I stopped looking.
I'm now only wanting a Glock 27, and am considering going to a large pawn shop/gun shop in Waco to see if I can trade a pretty high dollar wrist watch that I own but rarely wear, for the Glock.

Only one more gun. Me too. Last three or four I've bought, I only wanted the one. It reminds me of an old farmer I used to know. He didn't want much more land, just the fields next to his. :D

Boy does that ever sound like me! I enjoy making the gun suit my tastes and the challenge of getting them to shoot great groups, then I part with a gun that's perfect for the next must have gun. I'm sure that lack of funding has something to do with it, but if I kept all the guns I ever bought I'd need a new house just for the guns. Sure would be a great house to visit though! I'll have to sit down and try to rememeber how many guns I've owned over the years.

I have only been into guns for about 2 years now. Serously only one year. I bought my first hand gun Jan of last year but had a couple of 22 rifles before that.
I now have around 16-18 guns now I guess. Nothing really outrageous, none of my guns cost more than few hundred bux but still its danged addicitive.
I started out last jan figuring I would build 3 ak47's and get a couple of hand guns and call it good.
Yeah, right!!
Then I met Mike who showed me the ways of the revolver and cowboy action. I now have more revolvers than semi-auto pistols.
Thanks Mike!!
I am not a hunter either, never hunted a day in my life but I'm still addicted to these guns.
I keep buying them on layaway as well.

Well look at it this way Bo, Now you have enough guns that your wife isn't able to tell when you are bringing a new one into the house.

If I can't pay cash I use the credit card and get rewards points. Nothing more is purchased on credit until its paid off. I do mean nothing not even food. In some ways I'm very disciplined.
I bought two guns on layaway and the stress was too much for me. Trying to come up with the full amount in 30 days was a stretch and I decided not to do it again. There is always another gun out there and often at a better price if you look hard enough.

A. I don't like spending all my Christmas Club at once.
B. I mail in my installments to the gunshop in question.
C. I use the layaway time to also acquire more accessories for my gun.
D. You can put stuff away on layaway with a non-operator's ID.
E. Said ID meets ATF 4473 requirements for a gun purchase.
