Percussion Caps

Hi guys.

I have had an 1858 uberti replica for some time now and I have not shot it, but the other day I decided that I should at least try and run some percussion caps through it. So I came home today with 2 tins, both #11 sized, with one from remington and the other by rws, and I quickly realized that while the caps seem to go on, fire, and fit fine they do NOT stay on unless I fire into the ground. Anyways, I am wondering if there is some trick to get them to stay on or if I just need smaller caps, though #11 is what is recommended. After awhile the carbon build up on the nipples seemed to help snug up the problem a little bit, but I wonder if that is the right solution.

Try a #10 cap. They have a longer neck and work better on pistols

#10 caps, but if #11 is all you have, try pinching them a little so that they fit snug, but some will likely still fall or blow off during firing. Some caps fit better than others too.

I agree with everyone use the 10 caps for the pistol thoe they will be a little harder to seat. But there is no risk of them comming off. These are the ones I use and have no problems good luck!

Thanks. I will give that a shot.

Funny, all they had at gander mountain were #10s, but the clerk said that they wouldnt work. So I left empty handed and went across town on a mission to find some #11's.

Ahh, thats life. :D

Agree with JBAR the Remington #10's work best for me on all my percussion revolvers. Another thing I might add, Uberti or Pietta most of the factory nipples are not well in spec and pretty much junk. The first thing I do when I get a new capgun is replace the nipples with Treso nipples. I shoot my percussion guns a lot so depending on usage I usually replace the nipples every six months to a year and keep a spare set for each revolver.

The hammer striking the nose of the nipple will eventually flatten enough so's it will hold #11 caps.
Re. 10's shoud work for you jest fine in the meanwhile pilgrim.

Shifty I just re read your post, from what you describe it sounds like you may not be fully seating the caps. I use thumb pressure on the hammer to seat each cap after capping. This is the way the oldtimers did it and actually the safest method. Can't do this in a SASS match because its against the rules, to hammer seat the caps though it seems the people who make the rules for SASS are people with little understanding or experience with percussion revolvers.

I have fired my Uberti Remington .44's at least 400-500 times with no misfires. I use #11 caps and pinch them a bit. NEVER seat a cap with your thumb. I have seen a fellow after an accidental discharge while capping and it looked like someone hit his thumb with a meat cleaver. OUCH!!!!!!!!!!

Mike, those that make the rules don't understand the situation? I am shocked and dismayed!!! Are you talking about the gamers of shooting or the government?

Shifty, try the tresco nipples. They are worth it.

Howdy Strawhat:
I was talking about the Territorial Governors in SASS who make the rules regarding the SASS legal guns, loading techniques, and other safety issues used in SASS matches.

They banned the practice of hammer seating caps on percussion revolvers. As a result many of the experienced percussion revolver shooters either went to cartridge guns or quit the game.

Yep Doug I've seen those pics of our friend Cuts Crooked's thumb. Ya definately don't want to use your thumb to seat the caps. I hate using a wooden dowell for that purpose too. Hammer seating them is the only practical way to go.

I've always used Remington #10 caps on my Old Army without any problems.
