Hello,
I'm wondering what the current fair price for standard 230gr Federal Hydra-Shok is?
I've been looking for this stuff locally, and it showed up at my gun dealer's for $25/20, tax included.
It's higher than the last time I saw them locally, but that was years back too. Federal supply here has been extremely spotty.
I bought one box to fill up two magazines. I'll buy another for spares if this is a fair price.
Thanks,
Josh <><

It's a 45, you don't need hollow points.

I use hollowpoints in any pistol mainly to keep overpenetration down.
'Sides, it can't hurt, and the ball ammo that I'd carry otherwise is just as much as, if not more than, the hollowpoints.

I know the Hydra-Shoks are popular, but I've never cared much for 'em.
I much prefer the 185-grain +P JHPs (like the Remington).
They're about the same price, but the 185+P's results are far more entertaining.

My 1911 is stoked with plain old Federal 230 hollow points. I also like Winchester 185 grain Silvertips.

Been looking for some of those and everybody seems to be out. It was my first 9mm carry load in 115gr and I have great respect for the design.
I do not like the 185 grain bullets from the full sized 1911. Just doesn't seem right to me somehow.

I use the 165 grain Hydra-Shoks in mine. It's only a 3" barrel and I've been told by people I respect that thats a good load for the shorter barrel.

Josh, aren't you supposed to fire 200 bobble free rounds before a load is proven reliable? Regards, Richard:)

That's why Winchester White Box Self Defense is popular. You can do that without taking out a second mortgage or selling the pickup.

We charge $23.99 for 20 rounds.
Speer GoldDot is $19.99 for 20 rounds.

Yeah, I am. But this particular gun has proven to be so reliable, even feeding several hundred rounds of full wadcutter match loads with no complaint, that I no longer feel it's necessary with this gun.
It will feed the Hornady XTP shaped Fiocchi with no problem, and the profiles are similar.

They probably have it, in the "Lawman" grade, which is the same ammo, packaged for the LEO trade. How he gets it I don't know, but I do know the price is right, and it's where I buy my .40 Hydra Shok from.

With the onset of winter, hollow points can be a detriment. Layered winter clothing is akin to shooting kevlar.
In anything marked .45, I just never use HP's. In the acp's its fmj and in the .45Colt it's softpoints or flat nose.

What brand FMJ do you use?
I decided years back that if I were going to use FMJ for whatever reason, it would be match grade stuff from Federal, but that stuff costs more than standard hollowpoint.
Thanks,

Sellier & Bellot... it's hot, but not quite +P. $14 and change per box of 50. No problems and targets consistently.

Thank you, Eljay.
Actually, I said that wrong. It's not "Lawman" grade that they sell, it's "LE" grade, which I've been assured by Federal that it's the same quality, only at a lower price. I've also been told that when a dealer gets way overstocked with it, he'll sell it to sites like the one I mentioned.
I like the price. :)

I actually like the Winchester white box 230gr JHPs, and I can't imagine you'd be too pleased if shot with one. Right now I've got a box of 230gr SXTs, and will likely be carrying them - not sure where the box even came from, but they'll work.

Hi Anthony,
The only think I don't like about the Winchester is that the nose gets scrunched in if a round is rechambered more than a couple times. Other than that, I do like them.
Water tests say they should be very effective.
Thanks,
Josh <><

Josh,
I've not had that issue. I mostly like them because of cost and the fact they hit where I want. I don't have a problem with Hyrda-Shoks either, and happen to be carrying 11 of them right now (9mm though).
