I need to know the main difference with the tauras model 608 (I think that was the model number. It's a 5 shot .357mag with light frame) and the model 65 (6 shot model). I know that one is heavier then the other but I want to get it for a special someone that has rised me. The person is going to be 62 next year and I don't know how her wrists are. I know that a lighter model with real .357mag rounds would probably kick like the dickens.

The problem that I have is: The bigger model is, well, big. It's kinda heavy (even for me) and I think that it would put too much weight in the manner that she would carry it (purse). But, the recoil would be less then the lighter model.

With the lighter model, I was thinking of getting it and porting the barrel and also just giving her a box of federal HS in .38 +p. These shouldn't kick as much as the real .357mags but will give the protection that is higher then a normal .38 round.

Also, do they make after market hammer shroads that will fit on the lighter model? With purse carry, and all the stuff that women normally have in their purses, the hammer has a good chance of catching on something. Either that or do you think that a hammer bob would work? That the hammer would still be heavy enough to ignite a round? (I bobbed the hammer on my charter arms .38 and it works fine but I would have a real gunsmith do the hammer on the .357 due to mine looks like a hachet job).

So, what do you think? She actually wants a Kel-Tec .40 like mine but I know that she wouldn't use it due to the recoil is a bear. I don't want to get her a pistol due to what can happen (jams, complex, etc..). I think that a revolver would be better for her. I also joined the local gun club (for other reasons then just to join, I'll put that in another post) and if I bring her along it only costs 10.50 for unlimited shooting in an indoor range.

So, what do you think?

Don't know the main difference with the tauras model 608, But you can use .38 Spl.'s in it and not get the heavy recoil as with the .357.
Bobing the hammer would work if you could be sure that it would fire all the rounds ever time.

Wayne,
The 65 is a 4" model, where the 605 (608 is large frame 8 shot), is a 2-1/2" model. If you're concerned about the hammer, the 605 comes in a "CH" (concelled hammer) model. You can also get factory porting.

If she will only be using .38 specials, you may want to look at the Taurus 850 CIA (Carry It Anywhere). It's a hammerless D/A only revolver, designed for concelled carry.

The cia is also available in .357 but it has a small boot grip which may be uncomfortable for someone with weak wrists. You may want to consider the ultra-lite version of the 605, it comes with the concealed hammer and the ported barrel for about $400.00.hope this helps.
