WHAT IS THE BEST .22 LR AMMUNITION FOR SELF DEFENSE?

For a plethora of reasons which I don't care to debate, I now carry a S&W Model 317
as my Primary Personal Carry Weapon. Fully aware that a .22 LR is not the caliber
or choice for this purpose I at least want to have it loaded with the 8 rounds that will
do the most damage. I have read pro's and con's on hollow point verses round nose.
What I think I want is the heaviest & fastest round nose round available but don't
know what it would be. I would love your input. Please...no flaming me over my personal
decision to carry this weapon / caliber, as I said I have many reasons.

If I had to use a .22LR for defense in a pistol I think I'd go for one of the max speed hollowpoints like the Stinger.

The CCI Stinger seems to be the round of choice. The CCI Velocitor is a great round but from that short bbl. I would want to see what the Chrony says. I would not want to challenge a practiced and determined man armed with a .22....Regardless of the ammo. A hit in the eye box (about the size of a 3X5 index card) will stop most any fight. Ask any ER Doc.

.22 lr gel test.

CCI stinger would be my choice for SD. Great expansion among others tested.

stinger as well... one a 8 shot pistol. An old man at the local gun shop said he loaded his first one with ratshot. the the rest with a good lr round. he said when you get shot with ratshot it more of a painful shot everywhere and it throw the person off guard..also my dad and I shot yelow jackets and thet did great out of rifles.. just my 2 sense. reed in okee

I'd choose the Velocitor...even from the short barrel, its at least a full 40 grains with a big hollowpoint. Devestating round from a rifle, enough so that I wont use it hunting...

Velocitor. It has some speed to it, is heavier for penetration, and holds together well, even when expanding.

Did some testing on my own - into clay = penetrated and expanded to about .36 about 2" from the surface. Range was 10' :)

Well,if you must carry a 22, then get the gun that carrys the most ammo and spitts it out the fastest........the bullet type is like ford chevy or dodge!

High velocity copper washed solid for penetration and ease of use.

I'm hesitant to suggest a .22lr round for self defence but one of the hyper-velocitys would be the best. A hit with a .22 is better then a miss with a .45. And nothing beats a round that you WILL use to defend yourself.

i found the perfect sollution in 22lr if you can find them like at walmart like i did its a brick of federal copper jacketed hallow points for about 13 bucks not bad and if its for self defense best ammo and the copper jack keeps your bores from getting fowled up

I read once that Bill Jordan wished a snubbie revolver in 22 mag as a backup gun and mentioned a 22mag works good in a short barrel gun...check this out http://www.taurususa.com/newsreviews/CBOH2003_000.cfm

Pick any high velocity round then practice shooting silhouettes in the head ...a lot. It's going to take one or more to the brain box to stop somebody.

My experience with the hyper-velocity 22 LR's, I think the Remington Viper, a hp
would be among the best. I understand the Remington YellowJackets are good
for spreading to 33 caliber. That CCI MAXI MAG, I bet, would be great.

If I were using a .22LR for defense, I'd give serious consideration to Paco Kelly's Accurizer tool to reform the heads of the .22 bullets. The broader metplat will create a better wound channel, though I would expect penetration to be somewhat less.

I bought one from Paco, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet. It looks to be a well designed tool:

From the testing posted it looks like Stingers would not be what I'd pick. I'd stay away from the bulk pack stuff, to many mis-fires and go with at least 9 inches or better of penetration. Maybe the Yellow Jacket load. At least with a revolver a mis-fire or feeding issues are minimized.

CCI 22 short HP.

Har. I have an Astra Cub chambered in 22 short only. I tried to buy some ammo for it and remarked I was going bear hunting.

With a straight face, the clerk asked why anyone would want to hunt naked.

I agree with you: CCI Stingers. Overall, in my experience I have found that CCI rimfire ammunition is the most reliable one can buy. It functions well in all of my guns with very few jams and no misfires.

I've allways relied on Fedrel .22 lr. Allways been quite accurate in most of my rifles and pistols and verry reliable.

Velovitors are my choice. I used CCI stingers to kill a 250 lb hog we were going to butcher. First shot hit the forehead and shattered, no penetration, fragments came out by the eyes. It took 7 shots to kill that hog, I went and got some Federal HPs that did the job. No more stingers for me on anything with any size to it. POWDERMAN.:down:
