I have found 223 in my load data but i cant find 5.56 is there any load difference or is it just the thickness of the case?

Case thickness is the difference, but also important for loading .223 verses 5.56 is that the chambers are different. With 5.56 the leade is longer. Think of the leade as the area between the end of the chamber and the rifling in the barrel.

Start low and work up to suit your gun. I shoot reloads all the time. 55gr flat base soft points with cannelure and BLC-2 powder at 1 full grain below max. Very accurate and I feel no need to push it any further. Cycles and feed perfectly, and very effective loads on coyotes and smaller vermin.
Note: if you try to reload 5.56mm military surplus ammo, you will have to deal with the primer pocket crimp. There are tools for that. And when changing from one case to another type, drop your load and work up again in those cases.
Safe shooting!

The 5.56 allso works at a higher presure then the .223 round. Allmost all AR type rifles have a 5.56 chamber where Ruger mini 14 and CZ bolt action rifles are .223 chambers.

Is there a different OAL between 5.56 and 223?

I beg to differ, many guns are marked as 5.56 and have a 223 wylde chamber. Receivers are generally marked for both or 5.56, the barrel should be stamped under the hand guards as to which it is.

According to my old load charts no both are loaded to an OAL of 2.26. But that is for reloaded ammo, as to factory loads I don't know for certain what each manufacturer does.

OK i appreciate all the info, im wanting to find a upper (flat top) cause mine has the fixed carry handleI felt the same at first then came to appreciate the carry handle with scope and see thru B-Square mount that lets me use the handles peep sights as back up, close range finishing shot sights. A varmint scope at 20 feet or less showed nothing but out of focus hair when I needed to make a kill shot to finish the job. With the peeps I was able to place the bullet. I am keeping my carry handel upper.

Your probably right, I just have to get used to it first, cause i do ike the iron sights for quick close range target acquisition.
